Dividend kya hai hindi mein samjho — dividend yield, ex-date, record date, dividend investing strategy. Indian stocks pe real examples.
Dividend ek payment hai jo company apne shareholders ko deti hai — apne profit ka hissa. Jab company profit kamati hai, wo us profit ka kuch hissa shareholders mein distribute karti hai.
Simple words: Aapne company ke shares kharide hain = aap company ke owner mein se ek ho. Company profit kamati hai = aapko bhi kuch milta hai. Ye "kuch" = dividend.
Example:
• ITC ne 2025 mein ₹15 per share dividend diya
• Aapke paas 1000 shares hain = ₹15,000 dividend
• Ye paisa directly aapke bank account mein aata hai
Types of dividends:
• Cash dividend — sabse common, cash bank mein aata hai
• Stock dividend (bonus shares) — extra shares milte hain
• Special dividend — ek-time dividend (windfall profit pe)
• Interim dividend — financial year ke beech mein
• Final dividend — year-end pe
1. Declaration Date:
• Jab company's board dividend announce karti hai
• Amount, ex-date, record date sab declare hota hai
2. Ex-Date (Ex-Dividend Date):
• Sabse important date
• Ex-date pe ya uske baad stock kharido = dividend NAHI milega
• Ex-date se EK din pehle stock hona chahiye for dividend
• Example: Ex-date 15 Aug → 14 Aug ko end of day pe shares hone chahiye
3. Record Date:
• Company is din check karti hai kaun shareholders hain
• Record date pe jo shares aapke paas hain = unpe dividend milega
• Usually ex-date se 1-2 din baad
4. Payment Date:
• Jab dividend actually bank account mein aata hai
• Record date se 15-30 din baad
Critical Rule:
• Ex-date se pehle kharido = dividend milega ✅
• Ex-date pe ya baad mein kharido = dividend nahi milega ❌
Dividend yield = dividend amount / share price × 100
Example:
• ITC share price: ₹450
• Dividend: ₹15 per share
• Dividend yield = 15/450 × 100 = 3.33%
High yield = zyada income per rupee invested.
Indian Stocks ke Dividend Yields (Approximate):
• ITC — Price: ₹450, Dividend: ₹15, Yield: 3.3%
• Coal India — Price: ₹450, Dividend: ₹25, Yield: 5.5%
• ONGC — Price: ₹275, Dividend: ₹12, Yield: 4.4%
• IOC — Price: ₹170, Dividend: ₹8, Yield: 4.7%
• Power Grid — Price: ₹320, Dividend: ₹12, Yield: 3.75%
• NTPC — Price: ₹370, Dividend: ₹14, Yield: 3.8%
• TCS — Price: ₹4,200, Dividend: ₹150, Yield: 3.6%
• Infosys — Price: ₹1,900, Dividend: ₹63, Yield: 3.3%
• HDFC Bank — Price: ₹1,700, Dividend: ₹34, Yield: 2.0%
Note: Yields change karte rehte hain (price aur dividend dono change hote hain).
Strategy 1: High Yield Portfolio:
• Goal: Monthly/quarterly income from dividends
• Target: 4-6% portfolio yield
• Stocks: Coal India, ONGC, IOC, Power Grid, NTPC
• Pros: Regular income, capital preservation
• Cons: High yield sometimes = company in trouble
Strategy 2: Dividend Growth Investing:
• Goal: Companies jo har saal dividend badhate hain
• Target: 2-4% yield + 10%+ annual dividend growth
• Stocks: TCS, Infosys, HDFC Bank, Nestle, HUL
• Pros: Income grows over time, capital appreciation bhi
• Cons: Lower starting yield
Strategy 3: Dividend + Growth Hybrid:
• Goal: Income + capital appreciation dono
• Mix: 60% growth stocks + 40% dividend stocks
• Balanced approach
• Best for: Long-term investors (5+ years)
Kya Hai?:
• Dividend aaya → immediately same company ke aur shares kharido
• Compound effect: more shares = more dividend next time = more shares = more dividend...
• Long-term mein powerful compounding
Example:
• Year 1: 1000 shares × ₹10 dividend = ₹10,000
• → Reinvest: buy 22 more shares at ₹450
• Year 2: 1022 shares × ₹10.50 dividend = ₹10,731
• → Reinvest: buy 24 more shares
• Year 3: 1046 shares × ₹11 dividend = ₹11,506
• → Reinvest: buy 26 more shares
• Year 10: ~1400 shares × ₹17 dividend = ₹23,800/year
• Without reinvestment: still 1000 shares × ₹17 = ₹17,000/year
• With reinvestment: 1400 shares × ₹17 = ₹23,800/year (40% more!)
How to Reinvest?:
• Manually: Dividend aaye → same stock kharido
• Some brokers offer automatic DRIP
• SIP-like approach for dividend stocks
New Rules (April 2025+):
• Dividend income = taxable as per your income tax slab
• No DDT (Dividend Distribution Tax) now — company ne nahi, aapko pay karna hai
• Standard deduction: ₹10,000/year (Section 80TTB for seniors)
Example:
• Dividend income: ₹50,000/year
• Tax slab: 20%
• Tax on dividend: ₹50,000 × 20% = ₹10,000
• Net dividend: ₹40,000
TDS on Dividend:
• Company dividend > ₹5,000 per year pe 10% TDS
• Example: ₹15,000 dividend → 10% TDS = ₹1,500 deducted
• Net received: ₹13,500
• File ITR mein declare karo, excess TDS refund milega
Mistake 1: Sirf High Yield Pe Focus Karna:
• 8% yield = company may be in trouble (price fallen, dividend soon to be cut)
• Always check: Is dividend sustainable? Payout ratio < 60% = sustainable
Mistake 2: Ex-Date Ignorance:
• Stock kharida but ex-date ke baad = no dividend
• Always check ex-date before buying for dividend
Mistake 3: Dividend Trap:
• Company high dividend de rahi hai but debt zyada hai
• Dividend funded by debt (not profit) = unsustainable
• Check: Free cash flow > dividend amount
Mistake 4: Growth Ignore Karna:
• Sirf dividend dekh ke stock kharidna = capital loss possible
• Company not growing = share price not appreciating
• Dividend + growth dono check karo
Mistake 5: Tax Ignore Karna:
• ₹50,000 dividend ≠ ₹50,000 in hand
• Tax slab ke hisab se tax pay karna padta hai
• Net yield calculate karo (post-tax)
Even 1 share pe dividend milega. Amount = dividend per share × number of shares.
Payment date pe, usually record date se 15-30 din baad.
Nahi. Growth companies (like tech startups) reinvest profit instead of dividend. Mature companies (ITC, TCS, Coal India) regular dividend dete hain.
Profit se nikla dividend = safe. Debt se nikla dividend = unsafe. Payout ratio check karo.
