NSE mein stock aur index options ka expiry har Thursday ko hota hai. Expiry day pe:
• Weekly options expire ho jaate hain (value = 0 if OTM)
• Monthly options ka last Thursday = monthly expiry
• Premium sabse fast girta hai (theta decay peak)
Expiry day = high volatility + high opportunity + high risk.
Theta Decay on Expiry Day:
• Option premium = Intrinsic Value + Time Value
• Expiry day pe Time Value = 0 ho jaata hai
• OTM options: Premium starts at ₹X, goes to ₹0
• ATM options: Premium drops fast but retains intrinsic value
Key Timings on Expiry Day:
• 9:15-9:45 — What Happens: High volatility, premium still has value, Strategy: Buy options (if direction clear)
• 9:45-11:30 — What Happens: Momentum settles, trends form, Strategy: Best window for option buying
• 11:30-1:30 — What Happens: Theta accelerates, choppy, Strategy: Avoid buying options
• 1:30-2:30 — What Happens: European markets open, movement, Strategy: Last window for directional trades
• 2:30-3:30 — What Happens: Theta = near zero, expiry settlement, Strategy: Option sellers collect, buyers lose
Strategy 1: Morning Momentum (Best for Beginners):
• Check overnight news/global cues
• 9:15-9:30: Observe (DON'T TRADE)
• 9:30-9:45: Identify direction (Nifty above/below previous close)
• 9:45: Buy ATM CE (bullish) ya ATM PE (bearish)
• Hold till 11:30
• Exit by 11:30 (don't hold till afternoon)
Why exit by 11:30? Afternoon mein theta decay accelerate karta hai. Premium girta rehta hai even if direction right.
Strategy 2: Expiry Day Range Trade:
• Mark previous day high and low
• If price breaks previous high → Buy CE
• If price breaks previous low → Buy PE
• SL: Opposite side of range
• Target: 50-100 points (Nifty)
Strategy 3: Option Selling (Advanced Only):
• Sell OTM Call + Sell OTM Put (Iron Condor/Strangle)
• Premium collect karo
• Agar Nifty range mein rehta → dono options expire worthless → full premium profit
• Risk: Unlimited if breakout happens. Only for experienced.
Rule 1: Exit by 1:00 PM (Beginners):
• Post 1 PM theta = brutal
• Premium can go to zero in 30 min
• Don't hope for recovery
Rule 2: Max 1-2 Trades:
• Expiry day = emotion day
• 1 trade, done. 2 max. No more.
• Revenge trading on expiry = capital destruction
Rule 3: ATM Options Only:
• OTM expiry day = 95% chance zero
• ITM = expensive, less movement
• ATM = best balance of cost and movement
Rule 4: 50% Capital Risk Only:
• Expiry day risk = higher than normal
• Use half your normal position size
• If normal = 1 lot, expiry = half lot (not possible, so trade only 1 lot instead of 2)
Rule 5: No Overnight Carry:
• Expiry day = LAST DAY. Can't carry.
• 3:30 pe auto-square-off by broker (extra charges)
• Exit before 3:20 PM yourself
Weekly Expiry (Every Thursday):
• Less movement (usually)
• Premium smaller
• Range-bound common
• Strategy: Morning momentum + early exit
Monthly Expiry (Last Thursday of Month):
• BIG movement expected
• Institutional repositioning
• Higher premiums
• Strategy: Bigger targets, wider SL
• Monthly expiry = trend day often
Ye chhe baatein dhyaan mein rakho:
• OTM options kharidna expiry pe — 95% chance total loss
• Afternoon mein options kharidna — theta = zero
• Bina SL ke — expiry pe premium zero ho sakta hai
• Multiple trades — emotion + theta = loss machine
• Expiry ko aam din samajhna — expiry day different hai, different rules
• Carry karne ki koshish — 3:30 pe auto square-off + charges
Beginners ke liye: AVOID. Experience hone ke baad: morning momentum strategy try karo with small lot.
Option selling = UNLIMITED RISK. Beginners NEVER. Experienced: iron condor with hedging.
Monthly expiry = last Thursday, bigger movement, institutional activity. Weekly = every Thursday, range-bound often.
