Option Greeks Simplified: Delta, Gamma, Theta, Vega, Rho — Hinglish Guide

Option Greeks sun ke lagta hai koi rocket science hai. Nahi hai. Ye sirf 5 numbers hain jo batate hain ki option ka price kaise move karega. Ek baar samajh gaye toh options trading mein clarity aa jayegi.
Simple analogy: Option Greeks = car ke dashboard indicators. Speed (Delta), acceleration (Gamma), fuel consumption (Theta), wind sensitivity (Vega), aur steering response (Rho). Bas itna hai.
Kya hai: Delta batata hai ki underlying stock ₹1 change hone pe option ka price kitna change hoga.
Simple words: Agar stock ₹1 upar gaya aur option ka Delta 0.5 hai, toh option ka price ₹0.50 upar jayega.
Delta Values:
• Call Option — Delta Range: 0 to 1, Meaning: Stock upar → Call upar
• Put Option — Delta Range: -1 to 0, Meaning: Stock upar → Put neeche
Practical Delta Guide:
• 0.1 — Meaning: Very low sensitivity, Trading Use: Far OTM, cheap but risky
• 0.3 — Meaning: Low sensitivity, Trading Use: OTM, speculative
• 0.5 — Meaning: Moderate sensitivity, Trading Use: ATM (At The Money), balanced
• 0.7 — Meaning: High sensitivity, Trading Use: ITM (In The Money), safer
• 0.9 — Meaning: Very high sensitivity, Trading Use: Deep ITM, behaves like stock
Delta ko ek aur tarike se dekho — ye approximately batata hai ki option ITM expire hone ki probability kya hai:
• Delta 0.5 = ~50% chance option profit mein expire hoga
• Delta 0.3 = ~30% chance
• Delta 0.7 = ~70% chance
Trading tip: Agar aapko high probability trade chahiye toh Delta 0.6-0.7 wale options buy karo. Agar cheap premium chahiye (but low probability) toh Delta 0.2-0.3 wale.
Kya hai: Gamma batata hai ki Delta khud kitna change hoga jab stock ₹1 move karega.
Simple words: Agar Delta 0.5 hai aur Gamma 0.1 hai, toh stock ₹1 upar jaane pe Delta 0.5 se 0.6 ho jayega.
Why Gamma Matters:
• ATM options ka Gamma highest hota hai
• Deep ITM ya deep OTM options ka Gamma low hota hai
• Expiry ke paas Gamma sharply increase hota hai (ATM options mein)
Expiry ke paas ATM options ka Gamma bohot high ho jata hai. Iska matlab:
• Stock thoda bhi move karega toh Delta sharply change hoga
• Option price volatile ho jayega
• Small stock move = big option P&L swing
Tip: Expiry week mein ATM options avoid karo agar experience nahi hai. Gamma trap ne sabse experienced traders ko bhi mara hai.
Kya hai: Theta batata hai ki har din option kitna value lose karega due to time decay.
Simple words: Option ek perishable item hai — jaise doodh ki expiry date. Har din guzrne ke saath option ka value kam hota hai.
Theta Values:
• Long Call/Put — Theta: Negative, Effect: Aap har din paisa lose karte ho
• Short Call/Put — Theta: Positive, Effect: Aapko time decay benefit deta hai
Theta Practical Examples:
• Option premium: ₹100
• Theta: -₹2/day
• After 1 day: ₹98 (bina kisi stock move ke)
• After 10 days: ₹80 (bina kuchi stock move ke)
Key Theta Rules:
• ATM options ka Theta highest hota hai — time decay sabse zyada ATM pe
• Expiry ke paas Theta accelerate hota hai — last week mein decay 3-5x faster
• Option buyers = Theta ka enemy — har din value lose ho raha hai
• Option sellers = Theta ka friend — time decay aapke favor mein hai
Trading tip: Agar aap options buy karte ho toh week-long hold mat karo — Theta aapko kha jayega. Intraday ya 1-2 days max. Agar sell karte ho toh time decay aapka profit hai.
Kya hai: Vega batata hai ki implied volatility 1% change hone pe option ka price kitna change hoga.
Simple words: Market mein "darr" ya "excitement" badhne se options mehnga ho jate hain. Vega ye measure karta hai.
Vega Values:
• Market calm — Volatility: Low IV, Vega Effect: Options saste
• Event approaching (RBI, results) — Volatility: High IV, Vega Effect: Options mehnge
• Post-event — Volatility: IV drops, Vega Effect: Options saste (IV crush)
Example:
• RBI policy aane wala hai. Implied Volatility = 25%
• Call option premium = ₹150 (includes high IV)
• RBI announces — no surprise. IV drops to 15%
• Option premium drops to ₹100 — even if stock didn't move!
• Aapne ₹150 ka option liya, ab ₹100 ka hai. ₹50 loss — sirf IV drop se.
Trading tip: Events se pehle options buy mat karo agar IV already high hai. Post-event IV crush = option buyers ka biggest enemy.
When to Use Vega:
• Low IV + Expected big move: Buy options (cheap premium, IV will rise)
• High IV + Expected calm: Sell options (premium high, IV will drop)
• IV Rank check: IV Rank > 50 = options expensive. IV Rank < 30 = options cheap.
Kya hai: Rho batata hai ki interest rate 1% change hone pe option price kitna change hoga.
Simple words: Rho sabse kam important Greek hai. Interest rates change frequently nahi hote, isliye Rho ka impact minimal hota hai.
Rho Values:
• Call Option — Rho: Positive, Effect: Rates up → Call price up
• Put Option — Rho: Negative, Effect: Rates up → Put price down
Why Rho Doesn't Matter Much:
• Interest rates change slowly (RBI quarterly meetings)
• Rate change 0.25% hota hai, not 1% — Rho impact negligible
• Short-term options pe Rho almost zero
• Long-term options (LEAPS) pe thoda matter karta hai
Trading tip: Rho ko ignore karo. Seriously. Delta, Gamma, Theta, Vega — ye 4 important hain. Rho sirf textbook ke liye hai.
Example: Reliance Call Option:
• Stock: ₹2,850
• Strike: ₹2,900 (ATM)
• Expiry: 15 days
• Premium: ₹45
• Greeks:
• Delta: 0.50 (stock ₹1 up = option ₹0.50 up)
• Gamma: 0.08 (stock ₹1 up = Delta becomes 0.58)
• Theta: -₹2.5/day (har din ₹2.5 value lose)
• Vega: ₹3.0 (IV 1% up = option ₹3 up)
• Rho: ₹0.5 (ignore)
Bullish (Stock +₹50 in 5 days):
• Delta impact: +₹25 (0.50 × 50)
• Theta impact: -₹12.5 (2.5 × 5 days)
• Gamma impact: Delta increases to ~0.58, extra +₹4
• Net: +₹25 + ₹4 - ₹12.5 = +₹16.5 ✅ Profit
Neutral (Stock flat for 5 days):
• Delta impact: ₹0
• Theta impact: -₹12.5
• Net: -₹12.5 ❌ Loss (time decay killed you)
Bearish (Stock -₹50 in 5 days):
• Delta impact: -₹25
• Theta impact: -₹12.5
• Net: -₹37.5 ❌ Big Loss
Volatility Spike (IV +5%, stock flat):
• Vega impact: +₹15 (3 × 5)
• Theta impact: -₹12.5
• Net: +₹2.5 ✅ Small profit (IV saved you)
For Option Buyers:
• Delta 0.5-0.7: Buy ATM or slightly ITM options — balance of cost and probability
• Theta awareness: Don't hold options more than 3-5 days — time decay accelerates
• Vega check: Don't buy when IV is very high (IV Rank > 50) — IV crush risk
• Gamma caution: Avoid ATM options in expiry week — Gamma trap
For Option Sellers:
• Theta is your friend: Sell options with 7-15 days to expiry — fastest decay
• Delta 0.2-0.3: Sell far OTM options — high probability of expiring worthless
• Vega opportunity: Sell when IV is very high (IV Rank > 60) — IV drop = profit
• Gamma risk: Selling ATM options in expiry = high Gamma risk. Avoid.
Ye paanch baatein dhyaan mein rakho:
• Delta — What It Measures: Price sensitivity, Buyer Friend?: Depends on view, Seller Friend?: Depends on view
• Gamma — What It Measures: Delta change rate, Buyer Friend?: Yes (for buyers), Seller Friend?: No (for sellers)
• Theta — What It Measures: Time decay, Buyer Friend?: NO (enemy), Seller Friend?: YES (friend)
• Vega — What It Measures: Volatility sensitivity, Buyer Friend?: Yes (if IV rising), Seller Friend?: Yes (if IV falling)
• Rho — What It Measures: Interest rate sensitivity, Buyer Friend?: Ignore, Seller Friend?: Ignore
Q: Option Greeks calculate kaise karein? A: Broker apps (Zerodha, Groww) option chain mein Greeks show karte hain. TRT charting terminal pe bhi available. Manually calculate karne ke liye Black-Scholes formula hai but practical need nahi hai.
Q: Kaunsa Greek sabse important hai? A: Delta aur Theta. Delta = direction sensitivity, Theta = time cost. Ye dono 90% trading decisions mein matter karte hain. Vega third important hai (events ke around).
Q: Kya option buyers kabhi profitable hote hain? A: Haan, lekin sirf jab: (1) stock quickly move kare (Delta win > Theta loss), (2) IV rise kare (Vega win), ya (3) option deep ITM ho (high Delta, low Theta impact). Option buying is HARD. Option selling is easier but needs more capital.
Q: Theta decay weekend mein bhi hota hai? A: Technically yes — options price mein weekend ka time decay priced in hota hai Friday closing pe hi. Isliye Friday close pe options saste ho jate hain (extra 2 days decay priced in).
Q: IV Rank kya hai aur kaise check karein? A: IV Rank = current IV vs last 1 year high-low range. 0 = lowest IV in year (options cheap), 100 = highest IV (options expensive). Check: broker option chain ya Sensibull/Opstra.
