Waiting periods, sub-limits, room rent capping and the claim process

When choosing a health policy, people look only at the sum insured and the premium. The things that matter at claim time are often in the fine print inside the policy.
Every policy has an initial waiting period, and a separate, longer waiting period for pre-existing conditions. Certain specific illnesses also have their own separate period.
That is why a policy has to be taken before it is needed — a policy taken after an illness often does not cover that illness.
These are the very things that put part of the bill on you at claim time:
• Room rent limit — if you take a costlier room, the whole bill can be cut proportionately.
• Disease-wise sub-limits, such as separate caps on some procedures.
• A co-payment clause, under which a percentage of every claim is yours.
• At a network hospital you get cashless; otherwise it is reimbursement.
The cheapest plan often has the most clauses. Compare the difference in premium with the difference that will come out of your pocket on the day of the claim — that is the real price, not the premium.
