INTERNATIONAL FUNDS: INVESTMENT IN FOREIGN MARKETS

Feeder structure, impact of currency, and regulatory limits

Published by The Retail Trader · AUG 07, 2026 · Mutual Funds & AMC

The easiest way to invest in foreign markets is through an Indian fund which invests in vehicles. Its structure is often that of a feeder, and it has its own factors.

Meaning of FEEDER

Feeder fund puts your money in a foreign parent fund. Your relationship is with Indian fund, and the real portfolio is of the parent fund.

Therefore, the cost of do layer comes, and the performance of the parent fund is your performance.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

These things have a direct impact:
• Currency movements add to your rupee returns, both ways.
• There are industry level limits on overseas investment, breach of which may result in suspension of subscription.
• NAV update may vary depending on the foreign market.
• Tax treatment may differ from domestic equity funds.

A PRACTICAL POINT

The idea of global exposure is that your income and your portfolio are aligned with the same economy. That target doesn't change based on recent performance — so this allocation should be part of a plan, not a trend.
