The levels of KYC status, and the things that get an account frozen
Published by The Retail Trader · JUL 30, 2026 · Compliance & Regulation
Sometimes a working account suddenly stops allowing trades, and the cause turns out to be KYC. It is a central system, and its status changes everywhere at once.
KYC records are held with KYC registration agencies. Once you are verified in one place, other intermediaries use the same record, so you do not have to go through the whole process every time.
That is why an issue in one place shows up everywhere. If the status is not validated, opening a new account or accessing certain products can get stuck.
These things often hold up the status:
• The address or mobile number has become outdated and has not been updated.
• An issue related to the linkage of PAN and Aadhaar.
• A bank account that is on record has been closed.
• A nominee-related declaration is pending.
Checking your KYC status yourself once a year is the cheapest insurance. A problem always shows up on the very day you have something urgent to do — and fixing it that day takes weeks, not days.
