MODEL PORTFOLIO: ONE LIST THAT IS THE SAME FOR EVERYONE

The benefit of a model portfolio, and why it is not your portfolio

Published by The Retail Trader · JUL 31, 2026 · Advisory & Research

A model portfolio is a published list that gives names along with weights. It teaches a structure, but it is not built for your situation.

WHAT THE BENEFIT IS

The biggest benefit is discipline — a framework for position sizing, diversification and review comes into view.

The second benefit is transparency, provided the list is published with a timestamp and the changes are also recorded publicly.

LIMITS

These limits apply to every model portfolio:
• Your entry price will be different — you do not get the price on the list.
• Your horizon and cash flow differ from that model's assumptions.
• The gap between the change notification and your executing it is your loss.
• Tax impact is different for every person, and the model does not count it at all.

ONE PRACTICAL POINT

Instead of copying a model portfolio, copy its structure — how many names, at what weight, and when to review. The structure is transferable; someone else's entry price is not.
