When acceleration is strength and when it is fatigue
Published by The Retail Trader · AUG 03, 2026 · Price Action
When price moves fast, the trend seems strong. That same speed is sometimes the middle of a trend and sometimes its last stretch. The difference shows not in the move but in the behaviour around it.
In healthy momentum the move is steady, small pullbacks come along the way, and volume stays consistent in the direction of the trend.
In exhaustion the move suddenly goes vertical, volume jumps sharply in a single day, and the range of the candles becomes several times normal.
If these come together, it calls for caution:
• A whole week's move in a single session.
• Very heavy volume with a long upper wick.
• The same name on every news channel.
• Repeated gaps on the chart that are not being filled.
Seeing exhaustion is not a signal to go short — a tired trend can go even higher. Its right use is to not put in new money and to reduce the risk of an existing position, not to bet the other way.
