A rest inside a trend versus the end of a trend — how to tell them apart
Published by The Retail Trader · AUG 01, 2026 · Price Action
A running trend pauses in the middle and moves a little the other way. That same move is either a pullback or the start of a reversal — and at that moment the two look exactly alike.
A pullback is a small counter move inside a trend. After it, the trend moves ahead in its own direction and the earlier swing points remain intact.
In a reversal that structure breaks — in an uptrend the previous higher low breaks, and new swing points begin to form in the opposite direction.
These things help tell them apart:
• Whether the trend's previous swing point is intact or broken.
• The size of the counter move — how much bigger it is than the trend's normal pullback.
• Whether volume has risen in the counter direction or dried up.
• What the higher timeframe structure is saying.
This difference is never certain in real time — it becomes clear only afterwards. That is why the job of position size and stop loss is to make that uncertainty affordable, not to answer that question.
