What consolidation is, and why trend tools fail in that phase
Published by The Retail Trader · JUL 26, 2026 · Price Action
For a large part of the time the market goes nowhere — it keeps moving within a range. Most losses happen in this phase, because tools built for trends work in reverse here.
A range means the price keeps swinging back and forth between an upper level and a lower level, and neither side is winning.
In that phase every breakout comes back and every trend indicator keeps flipping its signal. That is not a fault of the indicator — it simply was not built for that market.
These four things become the opposite of what they are in a trend phase:
• The logic of positions lies at the edges, not in the middle.
• Moving average crossovers give the most false signals here.
• Targets have to be kept small, because the range itself is small.
• The best decision is often not to take a trade.
The first question should always be this — is the market in a trend or in a range right now. This one question settles half your decisions in advance, because the right behaviour in the two phases is the opposite of each other.
