STEP-UP SIP: INVESTING A LITTLE MORE EVERY YEAR

Raising your contribution as income grows, and its long-run effect

Published by The Retail Trader · AUG 09, 2026 · Mutual Funds & AMC

Most people start a SIP once and the same amount keeps running for years. Meanwhile their income keeps growing, but the investment stays where it was.

WHAT STEP-UP IS

In a step-up SIP, the amount increases automatically every year by a set percentage or sum. Once you set it, it runs on its own.

The logic is simple — if income is rising, the absolute number you save should rise too, otherwise lifestyle eats the entire increment.

ITS EFFECT

This is a small change with a long-lasting effect:
• The effect on the corpus is not just of the extra amount, but of the compounding of that amount.
• It is a natural hedge against inflation — if expenses are rising, so does the investment.
• It can cut the time needed to reach a goal considerably.
• It can be paused or adjusted at any time.

ONE PRACTICAL POINT

The easiest time to set it up is when you have just received an increment — at that moment the money has not yet entered your spending. A week later the same decision becomes much harder, because by then the money starts to feel like yours.
