The math of pure protection, and what gets hidden inside mixed products
Published by The Retail Trader · JUL 28, 2026 · Retirement & Insurance
The job of insurance is to protect your family from the loss of your income. The job of investment is to grow money. When the two are combined in one product, often neither does its job properly.
In term insurance you pay a premium, and if something happens during the policy period the nominee receives the sum assured. If nothing happens, the premium is not returned, and that is the whole design.
This is why the premium is very low and the cover very large. It is the cheapest form of protection.
In investment-cum-insurance plans you should ask:
• How much cover there is. It is often far less than you need.
• What the charges are, and how high they are in the first few years.
• What the lock-in and surrender value are.
• How the expected return on that money differs from a simple alternative.
"You get your money back" sounds attractive, but it is not free. The price is lower cover and a higher premium. Keeping protection and investment separate makes the math of each clear, and lets you choose each one independently.
