What algo trading is, how it works, and how to start algo trading in India — a complete guide.

What Is Algo Trading?

Algo trading stands for Algorithmic Trading. It is a method where computer programs (algorithms) make trading decisions automatically — buy, sell, hold — without human intervention.

Simple definition: > Algo trading = A computer program that trades automatically according to your rules. You write the code, the program executes.

Real Example

You wrote an algorithm:
• "If Nifty 50 DMA crosses above 200 DMA + RSI is above 50 → BUY 1 lot Nifty futures"
• "Stop loss: 2% below entry"
• "Target: 3% above entry"

This algorithm scans automatically, places the order when a signal comes, sets the stop loss, and exits when the target is hit — all without any intervention from you.

How Does Algo Trading Work?

Step 1: Define the Strategy

First you have to write the trading strategy — clear rules:
• Entry conditions (when to buy)
• Exit conditions (when to sell)
• Position sizing (how much to trade)
• Risk management (stop loss, max loss)

Step 2: Code It

Write the strategy in a programming language:
• Python — Most popular (Zerodha Kite API, Backtrader)
• AmiBroker — AFL language, popular with Indian traders
• MetaTrader — MQL4/MQL5, forex + Indian markets
• TradingView Pine Script — Strategy testing, alerts

Step 3: Backtest

Test the strategy on historical data:
• Use the past 5-10 years of data
• Check win rate, profit factor, max drawdown
• Optimize (adjust parameters)

Step 4: Paper Trading

Test in the real market without putting in money:
• Place virtual orders
• Watch real-time performance
• Identify issues

Step 5: Live Trading

Run the algo with real money:
• Start with small capital
• Monitor continuously
• Adjust based on performance

Algo Trading in India

Regulatory Framework (SEBI):
• Retail algo trading: Allowed (2025 SEBI circular)
• Broker algo: Brokers provide algo platforms
• Direct algo: API-based trading allowed with broker
• Co-location: Keeping servers near the exchange (institutional)

Popular Algo Platforms in India:
• Zerodha Streak — Type: No-code algo, Price: Free + ₹800/mo, Best For: Beginners
• Zerodha Kite Connect — Type: API, Price: ₹2,000/mo, Best For: Developers
• Angel One SmartAPI — Type: API, Price: Free, Best For: Budget algo
• Upstox API — Type: API, Price: Free, Best For: Budget algo
• Tradetron — Type: Cloud algo, Price: ₹500/mo, Best For: Semi-automated
• AlgoTest — Type: Backtesting, Price: ₹500/mo, Best For: Strategy testing

Algo Trading Strategies

Strategy 1: Moving Average Crossover:
• BUY: 9 EMA crosses above 20 EMA
• SELL: 9 EMA crosses below 20 EMA
• Timeframe: 15-min chart
• Stock: Nifty 50 futures

Strategy 2: RSI Mean Reversion:
• BUY: RSI < 30 + Hammer candle
• SELL: RSI > 70 + Bearish engulfing
• Timeframe: Daily chart
• Stock: Nifty 50 stocks

Strategy 3: Breakout Strategy:
• BUY: Price breaks above 30-day high + Volume > 2x average
• SELL: Price breaks below 30-day low
• Timeframe: Daily chart
• Stock: Nifty 50 stocks

Strategy 4: Pair Trading:
• Long: Stock A (outperforming)
• Short: Stock B (underperforming)
• Entry: Spread widens beyond 2 standard deviations
• Exit: Spread reverts to mean

Strategy 5: Options Selling (Iron Condor):
• Sell: OTM Call + OTM Put (1 SD away)
• Buy: Further OTM Call + Put (protection)
• Entry: Monday 9:30 AM
• Exit: Tuesday 2:30 PM (before expiry)

Algo Trading vs Manual Trading

Keep these eight points in mind:
• Speed — Algo Trading: Milliseconds, Manual Trading: Seconds-minutes
• Emotions — Algo Trading: None, Manual Trading: High (fear, greed)
• Consistency — Algo Trading: 100% rule-based, Manual Trading: Variable
• Backtesting — Algo Trading: ✅ Historical data, Manual Trading: ❌ Not possible
• Scalability — Algo Trading: Unlimited, Manual Trading: Limited by screen time
• Cost — Algo Trading: Platform + API fees, Manual Trading: Brokerage only
• Complexity — Algo Trading: High (coding required), Manual Trading: Low
• Monitoring — Algo Trading: Minimal, Manual Trading: Full-time

Algo Trading Risks

Overfitting

The strategy works well on historical data but fails live. "Curve fitting" — fitting the past perfectly but not working in the future.

Technical Failures:
• Internet connection lost → orders will not go through
• API error → wrong orders may be placed
• Server crash → positions may stay open

Market Regime Change

A strategy that works in a trending market will fail in a range-bound one. The strategy will have to adapt.

Black Swan Events

An algorithm cannot handle unexpected events — a budget surprise, war, pandemic. Manual intervention is essential.

Getting Started — Step by Step

Beginner (No Coding):
• Use Zerodha Streak (no-code platform)
• Build the strategy in the visual interface
• Backtest
• Do paper trading
• Go live with small capital

Intermediate (Basic Coding):
• Learn Python (1-2 months)
• Use the Zerodha Kite Connect API
• Backtest with Backtrader or Zipline
• Develop the strategy
• Paper trading → Live

Advanced:
• Consider a co-location server
• Build low-latency infrastructure
• Run multiple strategies in parallel
• Build a risk management system
• Build a monitoring dashboard
