The best indicators for intraday trading — VWAP, EMA, RSI, Bollinger Bands, Volume — a complete guide.
In intraday trading, decisions have to be made within minutes — there is no time to analyse for days at a stretch like in swing or positional trading. That is why choosing the right indicators, ones that give fast and reliable signals, is a core part of intraday success.
Common mistake: Many beginners put 8-10 indicators on the chart at once, which leads to "analysis paralysis" — so many signals that no clear decision can be made. This guide covers only the indicators that have actually proven themselves in intraday — and how to combine them without confusion.
What it is: A volume-weighted average price that tells you what the average price is, considering volume.
How to use:
• Price above VWAP → Bullish (buyers in control)
• Price below VWAP → Bearish (sellers in control)
• Bounce off VWAP → Support/resistance
Settings: Default (no parameters needed) Timeframe: 5-min, 15-min chart Best for: Intraday directional bias
Settings: 9 EMA + 20 EMA
How to use:
• 9 EMA crosses above 20 EMA → BUY
• 9 EMA crosses below 20 EMA → SELL
• Price above both EMAs → Bullish bias
• Price below both EMAs → Bearish bias
Timeframe: 5-min, 15-min Best for: Trend following intraday
Settings: 9-period (faster for intraday)
How to use:
• RSI > 70 → Overbought (caution for buyers)
• RSI < 30 → Oversold (caution for sellers)
• RSI divergence → Reversal signal
• RSI 50 → Trend bias (above = bullish, below = bearish)
Timeframe: 15-min, 1-hour Best for: Momentum + reversal signals
Settings: 20 period, 2 standard deviations
How to use:
• Price touches lower band + reversal candle → BUY
• Price touches upper band + reversal candle → SELL
• Bands squeeze → Big move coming
• Middle band → Dynamic support/resistance
Timeframe: 5-min, 15-min Best for: Mean reversion + breakout
How to use:
• Breakout + high volume → Real breakout
• Breakout + low volume → False breakout
• Volume spike → Big move happening
• Declining volume → Trend weakening
Timeframe: All Best for: Confirmation of all other signals
The 5 above are the most beginner-friendly and widely used. As you gain experience, these 2 can be useful too:
A simple green/red line that clearly shows trend direction — it also works like a built-in trailing stop-loss. Read the full SuperTrend Guide here.
It tells you trend strength, not trend direction — it helps you decide whether to use trend-following indicators (EMA, VWAP) or range-bound indicators (RSI, Bollinger). Read the full ADX Guide here.
Keep these four points in mind:
• Scalping (1-5 min) — VWAP + Volume (fast, simple)
• Day Trading (15 min - 1 hr) — EMA (9,20) + RSI + Volume
• Range-bound/Choppy Days — Bollinger Bands + RSI
• Trending/News Days — VWAP + SuperTrend + ADX filter
Combo 1: VWAP + RSI (Simplest):
• Price above VWAP + RSI > 50 → BUY
• Price below VWAP + RSI < 50 → SELL
• Best for: Beginners
Combo 2: EMA Crossover + Volume:
• 9 EMA crosses 20 EMA + Volume spike → BUY/SELL
• Best for: Trending days
Combo 3: Bollinger + RSI:
• Price at lower band + RSI < 30 → BUY
• Price at upper band + RSI > 70 → SELL
• Best for: Range-bound days
Combo 4: VWAP + EMA + Volume (Triple Confirmation):
• Price above VWAP + 9 EMA > 20 EMA + Volume increasing → Strong BUY
• All three agree = Highest probability
Put on 10 indicators = confusion. Use 2-3 focused indicators.
Rule 2: 1 Trend + 1 Momentum + 1 Confirmation:
• Trend: EMA or VWAP
• Momentum: RSI or MACD
• Confirmation: Volume
Identify the trend on the 1-hour chart, then look for entries on the 5-min.
Indicators are ONLY probability tools. Combined with price action, risk management, and discipline.
Every new indicator adds a new signal — the more indicators, the greater the chance of getting conflicting signals. Don't use more than 2-3.
RSI/Bollinger are best for range-bound markets, EMA/VWAP/SuperTrend for trending markets. First check the market condition with ADX, then choose the right indicator.
Before trying a new combo, paper trade it or backtest it on historical charts — build confidence before putting in real money. Read the Paper Trading Guide here.
Indicators are probability tools, not guarantees. Make decisions only by combining them with price action, the overall market trend, and risk management.
