What a covered call is, how to use it in India, and an income strategy — a complete guide.

What Is a Covered Call?

A covered call is an income strategy where you already own stocks and sell a call option against them. You receive a premium, but your upside becomes limited.

Simple definition: > Covered call = Hold stock + Sell call = Premium income + Limited upside

How It Works

Keep these points in mind:
• Step 1: 100 shares of Reliance @ ₹2,500 (cost: ₹2,50,000)
• Step 2: Sell 2,600 CE @ ₹50 premium
• Step 3: Premium received: ₹50 × 25 (lot size) = ₹1,250
• If Reliance stays below ₹2,600:
• ✅ Keep shares + Keep premium = ₹1,250 income
• If Reliance goes above ₹2,600:
• ✅ Shares called away at ₹2,600
• ✅ Profit: (₹2,600 - ₹2,500) × 25 = ₹2,500
• ✅ Plus premium: ₹1,250
• ✅ Total: ₹3,750 (but missed upside beyond ₹2,600)

Covered Call Payoff

Keep these six points in mind:
• ₹2,300 — Stock P&L: -₹5,000, Option P&L: +₹1,250, Total P&L: -₹3,750
• ₹2,400 — Stock P&L: -₹2,500, Option P&L: +₹1,250, Total P&L: -₹1,250
• ₹2,500 — Stock P&L: ₹0, Option P&L: +₹1,250, Total P&L: +₹1,250
• ₹2,600 — Stock P&L: +₹2,500, Option P&L: +₹1,250, Total P&L: +₹3,750
• ₹2,700 — Stock P&L: +₹5,000, Option P&L: -₹1,250, Total P&L: +₹3,750
• ₹2,800 — Stock P&L: +₹7,500, Option P&L: -₹3,750, Total P&L: +₹3,750

Key insight: Profit capped at ₹3,750 regardless of how high stock goes.

When to Use a Covered Call

Best When:
• The stock is range-bound (₹2,400-2,600)
• The market is sideways
• You want income from existing holdings
• Mildly bullish (not strongly bullish)

Avoid When:
• Strongly bullish (you will miss the upside)
• Stock about to break out
• Results season (gap risk)

Indian Market Considerations

Lot Size Matters:
• Nifty lot: 25 → Sell 1 lot = 25 units covered
• Bank Nifty lot: 15 → Sell 1 lot = 15 units covered
• Stock lots vary (Reliance = 250)

Monthly Income Example:
• Portfolio: ₹10 lakh (4 stocks)
• Monthly covered call premium: ₹5,000-10,000
• Annual income: ₹60,000-1,20,000
• Return enhancement: 6-12% extra

Covered Call vs Naked Call

Keep these four points in mind:
• Risk — Covered Call: Limited (stock hedge), Naked Call: Unlimited
• Margin — Covered Call: Lower, Naked Call: Higher
• Best for — Covered Call: Income, Naked Call: Speculation
• Complexity — Covered Call: Low, Naked Call: High
