What a dividend is, how you receive it, and the best dividend stocks in India — a complete guide to income investing.

What Is a Dividend?

A dividend is a cash payment a company makes to its shareholders — out of its profit. When a company earns a profit, it gives a part of that profit to shareholders in the form of a dividend.

Simple definition: > Dividend = A share of the company's profit that you receive in cash. You hold shares = you receive the dividend.

Real Example:
• ITC pays a dividend: ₹6.25 per share (2025)
• You hold 1,000 shares: 1,000 × ₹6.25 = ₹6,250 cash
• This money comes directly into your bank account

How Does a Dividend Work?

Timeline:
• Declaration Date → Ex-Date → Record Date → Payment Date
• Company Shares Shareholders Cash
• announces trade list received
• dividend without finalized
• dividend

Key Dates:
• Declaration Date — The company announces the dividend
• Ex-Date — If you buy the share after this date, you will NOT get the dividend
• Record Date — The list of shareholders is drawn up on this day
• Payment Date — The dividend is received in cash

Important: Ex-Date

To get the dividend, you must buy the share BEFORE the ex-date. If you buy after the ex-date, you will not get the dividend.

On the ex-date the stock price also falls by the dividend amount — because the company has paid that money out.

What Is Dividend Yield?

Dividend yield tells you how much dividend you are getting relative to the stock price.

Dividend Yield = (Annual Dividend per Share / Stock Price) × 100

Example:
• ITC price: ₹450
• Annual dividend: ₹6.25
• Dividend yield: (₹6.25 / ₹450) × 100 = 1.39%

Dividend Yield Levels:
• < 1% — Low dividend (growth company)
• 1-3% — Moderate dividend
• 3-5% — Good dividend
• 5-8% — High dividend
• > 8% — Very high (check if sustainable)

• 1-2 stocks from each sector
• Hold for regular income
• Reinvest the dividends

Expected income: 3-5% annual yield + capital appreciation

Strategy 2: Dividend Growth Investing

Setup:
• Look for stocks that are INCREASING their dividend every year
• 10+ years of consistent dividend growth
• Quality companies with strong fundamentals

Example: ITC has increased its dividend for 25 years. HUL for 20+ years.

Strategy 3: Dividend + Value Combo

Setup:
• High dividend yield + Low PE ratio
• Undervalued stocks that also pay income
• Best of both worlds

Dividend Taxation (India)

After April 2020

Dividend income is added to your taxable income. The company also deducts TDS.

Keep these two points in mind:
• Dividend > ₹5,000 (per company) — 10% TDS
• PAN not provided — 20% TDS

Total tax: According to your income tax slab. If you are in the 30% bracket, the dividend is taxed at 30%.

Tax Planning:
• Dividend stocks are tax-inefficient — the full slab rate applies to the income
• Growth stocks are tax-efficient — LTCG is only 10% (₹1L exemption)
• Better strategy: Buy growth stocks and pay 10% tax on capital gains

Dividend vs Growth Investing

Keep these six points in mind:
• Income — Dividend Investing: Regular cash flow, Growth Investing: No income (reinvested)
• Tax — Dividend Investing: Slab rate (high), Growth Investing: LTCG 10% (low)
• Volatility — Dividend Investing: Lower (stable companies), Growth Investing: Higher (growth companies)
• Returns — Dividend Investing: 6-10% (yield + appreciation), Growth Investing: 12-20% (appreciation)
• Best for — Dividend Investing: Retirees, income seekers, Growth Investing: Long-term wealth builders
• Risk — Dividend Investing: Lower, Growth Investing: Moderate-High

Recommendation: Under 40? Go for growth investing. Over 50? Consider dividend investing.

Common Dividend Mistakes

High Yield = Good Stock

Check any 8%+ yield — is it sustainable, or is the yield high only because the company's stock price has fallen? (Yield trap)

Buying Before the Ex-Date Only for the Dividend

On the ex-date the stock price falls by the dividend amount. The net effect is zero. Do not buy a stock just for the dividend.

Ignoring Dividend Tax

The full slab rate applies to dividends. On ₹10 lakh income, 30% tax = ₹30,000 on a ₹1 lakh dividend. Tax planning is essential.

Holding Only Dividend Stocks

Diversification is essential. Only dividend stocks = sector concentration risk.
