A ONE-PAGE FINANCIAL PLAN: YOU NEED NOTHING MORE

Goals, timelines and allocation — all on one page

Published by The Retail Trader · AUG 09, 2026 · Features

It is easy to make financial planning complicated, and for that very reason most people never start it. One page is enough, and that one page works for years.

WHAT SHOULD BE ON THAT PAGE

At the top, goals — each goal with its timeline and its cost in today's rupees. Below that, today's assets and liabilities.

Below that, allocation — which goal's money sits where. And at the bottom, two lines: how large the emergency fund is, and how large the insurance cover is.

WHY THIS WORKS

One page has its own strengths:
• It can be seen whole, so contradictions show up immediately.
• It is easy to update, so it actually gets updated.
• It gives every product decision a reference.
• It can be shown to the family — and that is also one of its big purposes.

ONE PRACTICAL POINT

Once a year, rewrite this page without looking at the old one — and then compare the two. The things that have changed tell you whether your plan is working or you are just collecting products.

This article is for education only — it is not a buy or sell recommendation, makes no claim of guaranteed returns, and is not advisory. Rules, rates and mechanics change from time to time with the exchange, SEBI and RBI, so verify every number yourself with your broker or an official source.
