What F&O expiry is, weekly vs monthly expiry, expiry day trading strategies — a complete guide for the Indian derivatives market.

What Is F&O Expiry?

F&O stands for Futures and Options. Expiry means the last day of the contract — after that day the contract no longer exists.

Simple definition: > F&O expiry = the last day of a contract. After this day the contract is either settled (in cash) or exercised.

Indian Market Expiry Schedule:
• Nifty Weekly — Expiry Day: Every Tuesday, Type: Cash settled
• Nifty Monthly — Expiry Day: Last Tuesday of month, Type: Cash settled
• Bank Nifty Weekly — Discontinued by NSE (Nov 2024), Type: —
• Bank Nifty Monthly — Expiry Day: Last Tuesday of month, Type: Cash settled
• Stock F&O — Expiry Day: Last Tuesday of month, Type: Physical delivery
• Sensex — Expiry Day: Every Friday (weekly), Type: Cash settled

Weekly vs Monthly Expiry

Weekly Expiry (Nifty — Every Tuesday)

Characteristics:
• A new contract every week
• Very fast time decay (theta)
• Low premium (cheap options)
• High gamma risk (ATM options are volatile)
• A favorite of intraday traders

Best for: Experienced traders, intraday, scalping

Avoid if: Beginner, swing trader, positional

Monthly Expiry (Last Tuesday)

Characteristics:
• One contract per month
• Slower time decay
• Higher premium
• Lower gamma risk
• Used by position traders

Best for: Beginners, swing traders, options sellers

Avoid if: Intraday trader (less volatility)

Expiry Day Trading — What Happens?

Expiry Day Characteristics:
• Premium falls very fast (maximum theta decay)
• ATM options are very volatile (high gamma)
• The market moves toward Max Pain
• Volume is very high
• Spreads are very wide (less liquidity)

Expiry Day Numbers (Typical):
• Avg range — Nifty Expiry: 150-300 points, Bank Nifty Expiry: 400-800 points
• ATM option move — Nifty Expiry: 50-150% intraday, Bank Nifty Expiry: 100-300% intraday
• Volume spike — Nifty Expiry: 3-5x normal, Bank Nifty Expiry: 5-10x normal
• Max Pain accuracy — Nifty Expiry: 70-80%, Bank Nifty Expiry: 60-70%

Expiry Day Strategies

Strategy 1: Sell ATM Straddle (Most Popular)

Setup:
• On expiry morning, sell the ATM Call + ATM Put
• Identify the Max Pain level
• The market will move toward Max Pain → the premium of both options will fall
• Buy back at a lower price → Profit

Example:
• Nifty at 20,000
• Sell 20,000 CE @ ₹80
• Sell 20,000 PE @ ₹70
• Total premium: ₹150

If Nifty closes at 20,000:
• Both expire worthless
• Profit: ₹150 × 25 = ₹3,750 per lot

Risk: If Nifty moves too much, the loss is unlimited. A stop loss is essential.

Strategy 2: Iron Condor (Limited Risk)

Setup:
• Sell an OTM Call + buy a further OTM Call
• Sell an OTM Put + buy a further OTM Put
• Profit zone: Range between the sold strikes

Better than a straddle: The risk is limited. If the market moves out of the range, the maximum loss is defined.

Strategy 3: Directional Play (Expiry Day)

Setup:
• Identify the market trend (bullish or bearish)
• Buy an OTM option in the direction of the trend
• A fast move is expected on expiry day
• Book quick profit (30-60 minutes)

Risk: It is very volatile. Keep the stop loss tight. Keep the position size small.

Strategy 4: Expiry Day Scalping

Setup:
• Take ATM options (Call or Put — depending on direction)
• Target of 10-20 points
• Stop loss of 5-10 points
• Multiple trades in a day

This strategy is only for experienced traders. It needs very fast execution.

Expiry Day Risk Management

Rules (Non-Negotiable):
• Max 1% risk per trade (expiry day is riskier)
• Position size half of a normal day
• Keep the stop loss tight (30-50% of premium)
• No new entries after 2:30 PM (settlement time)
• All positions closed by 3:15 PM (auto square-off)

Expiry Day Don'ts

❌ Holding OTM options till expiry (they will become worthless) ❌ ATM straddle without stop loss ❌ Trying a new strategy on expiry day ❌ Trading expiry on the basis of news ❌ Averaging down on expiry day

Max Pain — The Expiry Day Target

What Is Max Pain?

Max Pain is the strike price at which the maximum number of option buyers will lose money at expiry. The market moves toward Max Pain on expiry day.

How to Calculate It?:
• Look at the option chain
• Calculate the total OI at each strike (calls + puts)
• The strike where option buyers lose the least in total = Max Pain

Max Pain Trading:
• Identify Max Pain on expiry morning
• Market is well above Max Pain → SHORT (expect it to come down)
• Market is well below Max Pain → LONG (expect it to go up)
• Target: Max Pain level

Accuracy: ~70-80% on Nifty expiry days
