Want to become a full time trader? Requirements, capital, plan, reality — a complete guide.

The Reality of Becoming a Full Time Trader

Full time trading is not easy. 90% of traders lose money. But with proper preparation it is possible.

Requirements Before Going Full Time

1. Minimum Capital:
• Living expenses — ₹30,000-50,000
• Trading capital needed — ₹10-25 lakh
• Emergency fund — ₹3-5 lakh
• Total needed — ₹15-30 lakh

2. Proven Track Record:
• Minimum 2 years profitable part-time trading
• Consistent returns (not one lucky month)
• Journal maintained with data

3. Multiple Income Sources:
• Trading income (primary)
• Dividend income (secondary)
• Part-time consulting/teaching (backup)
• Never rely 100% on trading income initially

Full Time Trading Plan

Month 1-6: Transition Phase:
• Keep your day job, trade mornings/evenings
• Build an emergency fund (6 months expenses)
• Test your strategy with real money (small positions)
• Track every trade in a journal

Month 7-12: Part-Time Trading:
• Reduce job hours if possible
• Increase trading capital gradually
• Focus on 1-2 strategies only
• Track monthly P&L

Year 2+: Full Time (If Profitable):
• Leave your job ONLY if:
• ✅ 2 years profitable track record
• ✅ 6 months expenses saved
• ✅ ₹10L+ trading capital
• ✅ Strategy works in different markets

Income Expectations

Keep these four points in mind:
• ₹5 lakh — Monthly Return: 3%, Monthly Income: ₹15,000
• ₹10 lakh — Monthly Return: 3%, Monthly Income: ₹30,000
• ₹25 lakh — Monthly Return: 3%, Monthly Income: ₹75,000
• ₹50 lakh — Monthly Return: 3%, Monthly Income: ₹1,50,000

3% monthly = 36% annual = Very good return for a full-time trader

Full Time Trader Schedule

Keep these seven points in mind:
• 6:00 AM — Market preparation, news
• 8:00 AM — Pre-market analysis
• 9:15 AM — Market opens — trading
• 3:30 PM — Market closes
• 4:00 PM — Trade review, journal
• 5:00 PM — Study, strategy improvement
• Evening — Rest, exercise, family

Full Time Trading Risks

No Fixed Income

There is no guaranteed income like a salary. Some months will be losses.

Mental Pressure

Losing money = risk of stress, anxiety, depression.

Isolation

Trading alone at home = social isolation.

Health Issues

8+ hours on a screen = eye strain, back pain, no exercise.

Career Gap

If trading doesn't work out, getting a job again is difficult.

Backup Plan

Make a backup plan BEFORE becoming a full time trader:
• Keep your skills updated (relevant to the job market)
• Part-time freelancing option
• Teaching/mentoring trading
• Passive income streams (dividends, rental)
