HERDING: WHEN EVERYONE IS LOOKING IN THE SAME DIRECTION

Other people's confidence becoming your own confidence, and where it ends

Published by The Retail Trader · JUL 30, 2026 · Trading Psychology

When everyone on the timeline is talking about the same stock, it becomes hard to doubt it. A crowd being there is not information — it is just a crowd.

THE TRAP OF SOCIAL PROOF

Under uncertainty a person looks at others to decide, and the market stands entirely on uncertainty. That is why this tendency is most active here.

The problem is that by the time the most people agree on an idea, that idea has often already been priced in.

WAYS TO THINK APART FROM THE CROWD

These four habits help:
• Write the case against a position before you take it.
• Ask how it would look if this turned out to be wrong.
• Do not let the reason for your entry be someone else's name.
• Look for the idea that nobody is discussing.

A PRACTICAL POINT

Being a contrarian is not a virtue in itself — going the opposite way is also following the crowd, just in the opposite direction. The real work is making sure the decision comes from your own process, whether or not it agrees with the crowd.
