What is Ichimoku Cloud indicator, how does it work, and how to use it in trading — complete Hindi guide with Kumo, Tenkan-Kijun and cloud strategies.
Ichimoku Kinko Hyo ("Ichimoku Cloud" for short) is a Japanese trading indicator that simultaneously shows trend direction, momentum, and support/resistance — all three on one chart. It was developed in Japan in the 1930s and is still considered one of the most comprehensive "all-in-one" indicators today.
Ichimoku seems complex at first glance — lots of lines and a shaded "cloud" area — but once you understand the components, it's an extremely powerful visual system.
Tenkan-sen = (9-period High + 9-period Low) / 2
Fast-moving line — shows short-term momentum (similar role to RSI/MA).
Kijun-sen = (26-period High + 26-period Low) / 2
Slower line — medium-term trend and dynamic support/resistance.
Senkou Span A = (Tenkan-sen + Kijun-sen) / 2, plotted 26 periods ahead
A boundary of the cloud — future support/resistance.
Senkou Span B = (52-period High + 52-period Low) / 2, plotted 26 periods ahead
Cloud's second boundary — longer-term reference.
Current closing price, plotted 26 periods back — for momentum confirmation.
"Kumo" (Cloud): The shaded area between Senkou Span A and B — this is Ichimoku's most famous visual feature.
Price vs Cloud:
• Above the price cloud – Bullish trend
• Below the price cloud – Bearish trend
• Inside the price cloud — Sideways/uncertain, avoid trading
Cloud Color:
• Green/Light (Span A > Span B) — Bullish bias
• Red/Dark (Span B > Span A) — Bearish bias
Cloud Thickness:
• Thick cloud = Strong support/resistance, harder to break
• Thin cloud = Weak support/resistance, price can cross easily
BUY Setup:
• Tenkan-sen, cross Kijun-sen above
• Price should be above the cloud (confirmation)
SELL Setup:
• Tenkan-sen, cross Kijun-sen down
• Price should be below the cloud (confirmation)
This is a signal similar to Ichimoku's MACD crossover — the most commonly used.
Setup:
• Price was consolidating inside the cloud
• Ab breaks above (or below) the cloud with a strong candle
Entry: Breakout confirmed, Stop with volume Loss: On the other side of the cloud Target: Trend continuation, trailing stop with Kijun-sen
Chikou Span (lagging line) is a unique confirmation tool:
Keep these two points in mind:
• Chikou Span above current price (by comparing back 26 periods) → Bullish confirmation
• Chikou Span below current price → Bearish confirmation
Full bullish setup: Price above the cloud + TK bullish crossover + Chikou Span above = strongest signal
Because the cloud is plotted 26 periods ahead, it shows future support/resistance zones:
Keep these two points in mind:
• If future cloud is thick and far, strong chance of current trend continuing
• If the future cloud is thinning or nearing price, the trend may weaken as price reaches a vehicle.
Keep these seven points in mind:
• ✅ Price above the cloud
• ✅ Cloud green/bullish colored
• ✅ Tenkan-sen > Kijun-sen (bullish crossover happened)
• ✅ Above Chikou Span price (26 periods back)
• ✅ Future cloud thick and bullish
• = HIGHEST CONFIDENCE BUY SIGNAL
Reverse will give the strongest SELL signal for all conditions.
Keep these three points in mind:
• Intraday — Timeframe: 15 min - 1 hr, Note: Default settings (9,26,52) can be adjusted for faster
• Swing Trading — Timeframe: Daily (default best), Note: Ichimoku was originally designed for daily charts
• Positional — Timeframe: Weekly, Note: Long-term trend confirmation
Note: Default settings (9, 26, 52) were originally created according to the Japanese 6-day trading week. Some traders adjust for the modern 5-day week (7, 22, 44), but the default settings are still widely used and reliable.
Keep these five points in mind:
• Components — Ichimoku: 5 (all-in-one system), MACD + Moving Average: 2 separate indicators
• Trend + Support/Resistance both — Ichimoku: ✅ Yes, MACD + Moving Average: Have to calculate separately
• Learning curve — Ichimoku: Steep initially, MACD + Moving Average: Easier
• Visual clarity — Ichimoku: Cloud is very visual, MACD + Moving Average: Lines only
• Future projection — Ichimoku: ✅ Yes (cloud 26 periods ahead), MACD + Moving Average: ❌ No
When the price is inside the cloud, the trend is unclear. Avoid directional trades in this zone.
TK crossover is the only weak signal. It is necessary to confirm with cloud position and Chikou Span.
Beginners get confused after seeing too many lines. Understand each component and then combine it – do not use the full system directly in the beginning.
Ichimoku is more reliable on daily/weekly charts — there is a lot of noise on 1-min/5-min charts.
Keep these points in mind:
• 📌 ICHIMOKU CLOUD QUICK REFERENCE
• 5 Components:
• Tenkan-sen (fast line) | Kijun-sen (base line)
• Senkou Span A/B (cloud boundaries) | Chikou Span (lagging confirmation)
• BUY Signal:
• ✅ Price above cloud
• ✅ TK bullish crossover
• ✅ Chikou Span above price (26 periods back)
• SELL Signal:
• ❌ Price below cloud
• ❌ TK bearish crossover
• ❌ Chikou Span below price
• CLOUD RULES:
• 🔥 Thick cloud = strong support/resistance
• 🔥 Thin cloud = weak, easily broken
• 🔥 Future cloud = forward-looking S/R zones
• AVOID:
• ⚠️ Trading when price is inside the cloud
• ⚠️ Relying on TK crossover alone
• ⚠️ Using on very short intraday timeframes without practice
Keep these five points in mind:
• Go to /charting
• Select a stock
• Search for "Ichimoku Cloud" in Indicators
• All 5 components will be auto-plotted with color-coded cloud
• Start with default settings (9, 26, 52)
Pro tip: Use Ichimoku as a standalone system — the need for separate indicators is minimized because it already combines trend + momentum + S/R.
Keep these three points in mind:
• SuperTrend Indicator: Complete Strategy
• MACD Indicator: Complete Trading Strategy
