The false feeling that more analysis and more monitoring help
Published by The Retail Trader · JUL 25, 2026 · Trading Psychology
Looking at more charts, reading more news and checking your position again and again gives a feeling of control. None of them changes the market's outcome.
Humans link effort with outcome, and in most places that link is correct. The market is one of the few places where effort has no direct relationship with the outcome.
So even after working harder, you get the same random outcomes, and that feels confusing.
Very few things — but they are the most important ones:
• Which trade to take and which not to take.
• The size of the position.
• The stop loss and the exit plan.
• How often to trade.
The outcome is not on that list, and that is the whole point. From the day you start grading yourself on these four things, the ups and downs of the result stop changing the quality of your decisions.
