MACD Indicator: Complete Guide for Trading

What Is MACD? (Introduction)

The full form of MACD is Moving Average Convergence Divergence. This indicator was created by Gerald Appel in the 1970s and even today it is one of the most popular momentum indicators.

In simple words: MACD shows the relationship between two moving averages — it tells you whether momentum is strong or weak, and whether the trend is changing or not.

MACD is made of 3 components:

Keep these three points in mind:
• MACD Line = 12-period EMA – 26-period EMA
• Signal Line = 9-period EMA of the MACD line
• Histogram = MACD Line – Signal Line

If the MACD line is above the Signal line = bullish momentum. If it is below = bearish momentum.

How to use it on the TRT chart: go to theretailtrader.org/charting, type the stock in search, and select "MACD" in indicators. It is available in the free plan too.

Understanding the MACD Line and Signal Line

MACD Line (12 EMA – 26 EMA)

The MACD line is basically the difference between the fast moving average (12 EMA) and the slow moving average (26 EMA).

Keep these three points in mind:
• When 12 EMA > 26 EMA → MACD line positive (above zero) → Uptrend
• When 12 EMA < 26 EMA → MACD line negative (below zero) → Downtrend
• When the MACD line crosses zero → Signal of a trend reversal

Signal Line (9 EMA of MACD)

The signal line is the 9-period EMA of the MACD line. It smooths the MACD line. Crossovers happen around this line.

Example: Look at MACD on RELIANCE

Look at the chart: apply MACD on the RELIANCE daily chart. When the MACD line crosses the Signal line from below to above (bullish crossover), price generally goes up. When it crosses from above to below (bearish crossover), price goes down.

MACD Crossover Strategy

Bullish Crossover (Buy Signal):
• The MACD line crosses the Signal line from below to above
• The histogram moves above zero
• Price is expected to go up
• Confirmation: Volume should also increase

Bearish Crossover (Sell Signal):
• The MACD line crosses the Signal line from above to below
• The histogram moves below zero
• Price is expected to go down
• Confirmation: Volume should increase

Example: MACD crossover on NIFTY 50

Look at the Nifty 50 daily chart — how many MACD crossovers happened in the last 6 months and what price did after them. Not every crossover works — that's why confirmation is necessary.

MACD Divergence (The Most Powerful Signal)

Divergence = when price and MACD move in different directions. This is the strongest signal of a reversal.

Bullish Divergence:
• Price makes a lower low (goes down)
• The MACD line makes a higher low (goes up)
• Meaning: selling pressure is easing, an upward reversal is possible
• Entry: After a confirmation candle (a bullish candle close)

Bearish Divergence:
• Price makes a higher high (goes up)
• The MACD line makes a lower high (goes down)
• Meaning: buying pressure is easing, a downward reversal is possible
• Entry: After a confirmation candle (a bearish candle close)

Example: Divergence on TCS

Look at the TCS chart — sometimes price is going up but MACD is coming down. This is bearish divergence. In such cases trade carefully or exit.

Reading the Histogram

The histogram basically shows the gap between the MACD line and the Signal line.

Keep these three points in mind:
• Histogram bars growing (upward) → Momentum is getting stronger
• Histogram bars shrinking → Momentum is getting weaker
• Histogram crosses the zero line → Trend change possible

Histogram Strategy:
• Watch the height of the histogram bars — when the bars are getting smaller, momentum is fading
• You can adjust your position before the zero line cross
• Exiting slightly before the histogram peak = profit booking

MACD Settings (Default vs Custom)

Default Settings: 12, 26, 9:
• 12 = fast EMA
• 26 = slow EMA
• 9 = signal line EMA
• Best for: Daily charts, swing trading

Custom Settings

For Intraday (faster signals):
• 5, 35, 5 → Faster crossovers, more signals, more whipsaws
• 8, 21, 5 → Balanced for intraday

For Long-term (slower signals):
• 24, 52, 18 → Slower, more reliable, fewer signals
• Best for weekly/monthly charts

TRT Pro Tip:

On the TRT charting terminal you can customize MACD settings — in the Pro plan you can change the settings of every indicator. For ₹2,499/mo.

Common Mistakes (Mistakes That 90% of People Make)

Keep these points in mind:
• Trading on the crossover alone — A crossover looks convincing, but without confirmation 60% of crossovers are fake. Always watch price action + volume.

Keep these points in mind:
• Ignoring divergence — Divergence is MACD's most powerful signal, but people focus only on crossovers.

Keep these points in mind:
• Using MACD for overbought/oversold — MACD is not RSI. It is a momentum oscillator, and overbought/oversold levels are not part of its design.

Keep these points in mind:
• Looking at MACD on every timeframe — MACD on a 1 min chart = noise. It works best on Daily/4H.

Keep these points in mind:
• Ignoring the histogram — The histogram tells the real story of momentum. Watch the bars, not just the lines.

FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between MACD and RSI?

MACD shows both momentum and trend (the difference of two EMAs). RSI shows only price strength (0-100 scale). Using both together = better signals.

Q2: Where does MACD work best?

MACD is most reliable on daily and 4-hour charts. The 1-minute chart has a lot of noise. Perfect for swing trading.

Q3: Can MACD be used alone?

Technically yes, but not recommended. MACD + price action + support/resistance = best combo. 2-3 indicators max.

Q4: Does MACD give 100% accurate signals?

No. No indicator is 100% accurate. MACD gives ~60-70% accuracy with good settings. Risk management is always necessary.

Q5: Can I use MACD on TRT for free?

Yes! The TRT free plan gives you 3 indicators — MACD is one of them. Go to theretailtrader.org/charting and try it.
