What market cap is, large cap vs mid cap vs small cap, how it is calculated — a complete guide.

What Is Market Cap?

The full form of market cap is Market Capitalization. It tells you the total market value of a company — that is, how much it would cost if you went to buy the entire company.

Market Cap = Current Share Price × Total Shares Outstanding

Example:
• Reliance Industries:
• Share price: ₹2,500
• Total shares: 676 crore
• Market cap: ₹2,500 × 676 crore = ₹16,90,000 crore (~₹17 lakh crore)

Meaning: the market value of the entire Reliance company is ₹17 lakh crore.

Market Cap Investing Strategy

Strategy 1: Market Cap Weighted (Index Investing):
• The Nifty 50 is market cap weighted
• Top companies get more weight
• Buy an index fund = automatic market cap weighting

Strategy 2: Multi-Cap Portfolio:
• 50% — Category: Large Cap, Why: Stability, dividends
• 30% — Category: Mid Cap, Why: Growth + stability balance
• 20% — Category: Small Cap, Why: High growth potential

Strategy 3: Market Cap Rotation:
• Bull market → Small caps outperform
• Bear market → Large caps outperform
• Rotate according to the cycle

Limitations of Market Cap

Market Cap ≠ Company Value

Market cap is only EQUITY value. The company's total value (Enterprise Value) = Market Cap + Debt - Cash.

Can Be Manipulated Through Price

In low float companies the price can be manipulated → market cap can be artificially high or low.

Doesn't Reflect Fundamentals

High market cap = good company? No! Some companies have a high market cap despite poor fundamentals (hype).
