What MTF is, how margin trading works, risks and benefits — a complete guide.

What Is MTF?

MTF = Margin Trading Facility. The broker gives you a loan to buy stocks. If your own money is ₹1 lakh, the broker gives you an exposure of ₹3-4 lakh.

Simple definition: > MTF = Buying stocks by taking a loan from the broker. More quantity, more profit — but more risk too.

How MTF Works

Keep these points in mind:
• Your money: ₹1,00,000
• Broker margin: 4x
• Total buying power: ₹4,00,000
• If the stock rises 10%:
• Without MTF: ₹1,00,000 → ₹1,10,000 (₹10,000 profit)
• With MTF: ₹4,00,000 → ₹4,40,000 (₹40,000 profit)
• Your investment: ₹1,00,000 → 40% return!
• If the stock falls 10%:
• Without MTF: ₹1,00,000 → ₹90,000 (₹10,000 loss)
• With MTF: ₹4,00,000 → ₹3,60,000 (₹40,000 loss)
• Your investment: ₹1,00,000 → 40% loss!

MTF Charges

Keep these four points in mind:
• Interest rate — 12-18% per annum
• Brokerage — ₹20/order
• Margin required — 25-33% of trade value
• Pledge charge — ₹20-30 per stock

MTF vs Normal Trading

Keep these five points in mind:
• Leverage — MTF: 3-4x, Normal Trading: 1x
• Interest — MTF: 12-18%, Normal Trading: None
• Risk — MTF: Very high, Normal Trading: Normal
• Best for — MTF: Short-term (days), Normal Trading: Medium-long term
• Margin call — MTF: Yes, Normal Trading: No

MTF Risks

Margin Call

If the stock price falls, the broker will ask for more money. If you do not provide it, the position will be closed forcibly.

Interest Cost

12-18% interest is charged. It is fine for a short-term trade, but expensive for the long term.

Unlimited Loss

With leverage, losses multiply too. A 10% fall in the stock = 40% portfolio loss.

Forced Liquidation

The broker can close the position without informing you if the margin is not maintained.

When to Use MTF

Use When:
• Short-term directional trade (2-5 days)
• High conviction setup
• There is a strict stop loss
• The trend is clear

Avoid When:
• Uncertain market
• No stop loss
• Long-term investment
• Low conviction
