What are Pledge Shares?

Pledge shares means taking a loan by keeping the shares as collateral. Promoters take loan by pledging shares of their company.

Simple definition: > Pledge = Pledge of Shares. Promoters need cash → pledge shares → get loan from bank.

• 0-10% — Risk Level: Low, Interpretation: Normal, safe
• 10-30% — Risk Level: Medium, Interpretation: Monitor
• 30-50% — Risk Level: High, Interpretation: Risky, avoid
• 50%+ — Risk Level: Very High, Interpretation: Major red flag

Why Promoters Pledge Shares

Concerning Reasons:

Risks of Pledged Shares

Margin Call Risk

If stock price falls → bank will ask for more collateral. Not given → bank will sell shares → price will fall further.

Forced Selling

Bank can sell shares without promoter's consent → massive selling pressure → stock crash.

Downward Spiral

Price falls → Margin call → Forced selling → Price falls more → More margin calls
