What is Stock market crash, what to do in crash, how to survive — complete Hindi guide for Indian investors.

What is Stock Market Crash?

Stock market crash occurs when the market falls too fast and too much — usually 10%+ in a few days or weeks. This happens because of panic selling.

Definition: > Crash = Market has fallen 10%+ in short time. Panic, fear, everyone is selling.

Famous Indian Market Crashes:
• 2008 Global Crisis — Nifty Drop: -60%, Duration: 12 months, Recovery Time: 5 years
• 2020 COVID — Nifty Drop: -40%, Duration: 2 months, Recovery Time: 6 months
• 2016 Demonetization — Nifty Drop: -6%, Duration: 1 week, Recovery Time: 2 weeks
• 2022 Rate Hikes — Nifty Drop: -18%, Duration: 8 months, Recovery Time: 12 months
• 2015 China Scare — Nifty Drop: -23%, Duration: 11 months, Recovery Time: 14 months

Pattern: Market crashes, but ALWAYS recovers. Timeframe varies — 6 months to 5 years.

What to do in a crash? (Action Plan)

Step 1: DON'T PANIC

"The money is gone!" — Only until you buy. Unrealized loss ≠ realized loss. Market recovers.

Step 2: Review Your Portfolio:
• Which stocks are there in the portfolio?
• Are they quality stocks or junk?
• Are companies debt-free or leveraged?
• Have long-term fundamentals changed?

Step 3: Hold Quality Stocks:
• Reliance, TCS, HDFC Bank, Infosys — all of them will recover
• Not to sell them but to HOLD them
• Infact, BUY if you get it cheap.

Step 4: Exit Weak Stocks:
• Penny stocks, debt-laden companies, management issues — EXIT
• It will not recover or will be very slow
• Book loss and shift quality

Step 5: Continue SIP

"If you stop SIP, the market will fall" - absolutely wrong. When the market falls, you get cheaper units through SIP. This is the biggest advantage of SIP.

Step 6: Maintain Cash Reserve:
• There should be an emergency fund of 6 months
• Buying opportunity available in Crash – need cash
• Do not invest by borrowing

Step 7: Buy the Dip (in Quality):
• Nifty PE < 18 → Buying opportunity
• Quality stocks have fallen 30-40% → Accumulate
• Buy gradually (don't go all-in)

What not to do in a crash

Panic Selling

"Selling everything hoon, save!" — Selling at the bottom = permanent loss. Market recovers, not your sold stocks.

Checking Your Portfolio Daily

If you look at your portfolio every day, your anxiety will increase. Check weekly, not daily.

Averaging Down (Other than Quality Stocks)

"If it's falling, buy more hoon" — average only in Quality stocks. Averaging = loss double in Junk stocks.

Invest by borrowing

"He invests after taking a loan, he is getting it cheaper" - Market may go down further. Interest on loan + portfolio loss = double disaster.

Following Tips

"This stock will recover, buy it" — don't do anything without research. Do your analysis.

Historical Recovery Data

Keep these three points in mind:
• 2008 — Bottom: Nifty 2,252, Recovery Level: 6,000, Time to Recover: 5 years
• 2020 — Bottom: Nifty 7,511, Recovery Level: 15,000, Time to Recover: 6 months
• 2022 — Bottom: Nifty 15,183, Recovery Level: 20,000, Time to Recover: 12 months

Lesson: For long-term investors, crash = buying opportunity. For short-term traders crash = capital preservation.

How to prepare for a crash?

Pre-Crash Preparation:
• Emergency fund — 6 months expenses in liquid fund
• Diversification — 10-15 stocks across sectors
• No leverage — invest without margin
• Quality stocks — Debt-free, strong fundamentals
• SIP running — Automatic buying during crash

During Crash:
• Hold quality — don't sell
• Exit junk — exit from weak stocks
• SIP continue — Cheap units milegi
• Buy quality — Thoda thoda accumulate
• Stay calm – control emotions

Post-Crash:
• Review portfolio — what was done right, what was wrong
