Understand Supertrend indicator in Hindi — settings, strategy, and how to use ATR-based trailing stop. Real examples on Indian stocks.

What is Supertrend?

Supertrend is a trend-following indicator that uses ATR (Average True Range). This indicator draws a line above or below the price which tells the direction of the trend.

Keep these two points in mind:
• Green line = Bullish trend (buy zone)
• Red line = Bearish trend (sell zone)

Supertrend is one of the simplest indicators — just look at one line and the trend is known. Therefore it is perfect for beginners.

Formula:
• Bullish: (High + Low)/2 + Multiplier × ATR
• Bearish: (High + Low)/2 – Multiplier × ATR

Use on TRT: theretailtrader.org/charting → indicators → select Supertrend. Available in free plan.

Supertrend Settings

Default Settings: 10, 3:
• Period (10): ATR of 10 candles is calculated
• Multiplier (3): Multiplies ATR by 3x (for bandwidth)

Custom Settings:
• 10, 3 (default) — Best For: Swing trading, Characteristics: Balanced signals
• 10, 2 — Best For: Intraday, Characteristics: Faster signals, more whipsaws
• 10, 4 — Best For: Long-term, Characteristics: Slower, fewer signals, more reliable
• 7, 3 — Best For: Intraday (fast), Characteristics: Quick trend changes
• 14, 3 — Best For: Positional, Characteristics: Very slow, strong trends only

Which setting is best?:
• Beginners: Keep Default 10, 3. Don't change until you understand.
• Intraday traders: Try 10, 2 (faster signals)
• Swing traders: 10, 3 (default) is best
• Positional traders: 14, 3 (slower, more reliable)

Supertrend Strategy — Basic

Buy Signal (Bullish):
• Supertrend line changes from red to green
• Price is above the Supertrend line
• Green line = serves as support
• Entry: At first candle close after formation of green line
• Stop loss: Slightly below the green line

Sell Signal (Bearish):
• Supertrend line changes from green to red
• Price is below the Supertrend line
• Red line = serves as resistance
• Entry: At first candle close after formation of red line
• Stop loss: Slightly above the red line

Example: Supertrend on NIFTY 50

Put Supertrend (10, 3) on Nifty daily chart. Look:
• When Supertrend turned green → Nifty went up
• When Supertrend turned red → Nifty went down
• There will be some false signals too – so confirmation is important

Supertrend + Other Indicators Combo

Combo 1: Supertrend + RSI (Best for Beginners):
• Supertrend = trend direction
• RSI = momentum confirmation
• Buy: Supertrend green + RSI > 50
• Sell: Supertrend red + RSI < 50
• Avoid: Supertrend green + RSI < 50 (weak trend)

Combo 2: Supertrend + MACD:
• Supertrend = trend
• MACD = momentum + crossover
• Buy: Supertrend green + MACD bullish crossover
• Sell: Supertrend red + MACD bearish crossover

Combo 3: Supertrend + 200 EMA:
• 200 EMA = big trend filter
• Buy only when: Price above 200 EMA AND Supertrend green
• Sell only when: Price below 200 EMA AND Supertrend red
• This combo greatly reduces false signals.

Supertrend for Intraday

Supertrend is a go-to indicator for intraday.

Intraday Setup:
• Timeframe: 5 min or 15 min
• Supertrend: 10, 2 (faster)
• RSI: 14 (confirmation)
• Volume: Must check

Intraday Rules:
• Buy: Supertrend green on 5 min + RSI > 50 + Volume above average
• Sell: Supertrend red on 5 min + RSI < 50 + Volume above average
• No trade: Supertrend frequently switching (choppy market)
• Stop loss: Slightly opposite side of the Supertrend line
• Target: 1:2 minimum risk-reward

Intraday Example: BANK NIFTY

Place Supertrend (10, 2) on Bank Nifty 5 min chart. Morning between 9:15 to 11 AM when Supertrend is green + RSI is 50+ + volume increases = buy. Opposite = sell.

Supertrend Limitations

Weaknesses of Supertrend:
• Useless in choppy market — When the market is sideways, Supertrend flips bar-bar (green→red→green→red). Too many false signals.

Keep these points in mind:
• Late entry — Supertrend gives signal after trend confirmation, so entry is a little late. Initial move may be missed.

Keep these points in mind:
• No target given — Supertrend only shows the trend direction, not the target price. You have to look at support/resistance separately.

Keep these points in mind:
• Gap up/down problem — If there is an overnight gap, Supertrend's signal may be wrong. Wait 15 minutes after morning gap.

When to use Supertrend:
• In Sideways/choppy market
• Major news events around (RBI, Fed, budget)
• In very low volume stocks
• First 15 min of market (volatility too high)

Common Mistakes

Keep these points in mind:
• Relying only on Supertrend — one indicator is never enough. Use with RSI or MACD.

Keep these points in mind:
• Taking trades in the choppy market — Supertrend sideways flips repeatedly. First check the trend (ADK > 25 = trending market).

Keep these points in mind:
• Putting a stop loss — Supertrend gives a trailing stop but keep a tighter stop loss for protection.

Keep these points in mind:
• Taking a trade on every flip — Do not take a trade on every green→red or red→green. Wait for the confirmation candle.

Keep these points in mind:
• Changing settings constantly — Start with default settings. Don't change settings until you backtest.

FAQ

Q1: On which timeframe does Supertrend work best?

Best in 15 min, 1 hour, and daily. There is a lot of noise per 1 minute. 5 minutes is acceptable for intraday.

Q2: Is Supertrend alone enough?

No. Use with Supertrend + RSI or MACD. 60% accuracy from single indicator, 70%+ from combo.

Q3: What does Supertrend's multiplier do?

Multiplier (default 3) controls the distance of the Supertrend line. More multiplier = line door = fewer signals but more reliable. Less multiplier = line passes = more signals but more whipsaws.

Q4: Is Supertrend free on TRT?

Hey! 3 indicators are available in TRT free plan. Supertrend is one of them. Try theretailtrader.org/charting.

Q5: Difference between Supertrend and moving average?

Moving average only shows the average price. Supertrend shows the volatility-adjusted line using ATR — the line moves open in a volatile market, close in a stable market.
