How to Create a Trading Journal — Complete Guide

How to Create a Trading Journal — Complete Guide

Published by The Retail Trader · AUG 19, 2026 · Features

A simple stat: 95% of professional traders keep a trading journal. 5% of Beginners. Guess which group is profitable?

Why is Trading Journal important?

Trading journal is the mirror of your trading. Without a journal, you are driving blindfolded – not knowing where you are going, where you came from, and what mistakes are being made.

You get 3 things from Journal:
• Pattern recognition — when mistakes are being repeated
• Performance tracking — are you improving or not
• Accountability – Have to answer to yourself

How to create Trading Journal – 3 ways

Method 1: Notebook (Simplest)

The most basic. Take a physical notebook. After every trade write this:

Keep these points in mind:
• Date: 17 Aug 2026
• Stock: RELIANCE
• Direction: Buy
• Entry: ₹2,850
• Stop-loss: ₹2,810
• Target: ₹2,930
• Exit: ₹2,890
• P&L: +₹40/share
• Entry reason: Breakout from 3-day consolidation + volume confirmation
• Exit reason: Target hit
• Emotion: Calm, waited for confirmation
• Rule followed: Yes — entry on breakout, stop-loss placed
• Mistake: None
• Lesson: Patience paid off

Pros: Zero cost, tangible, psychology better when you write by hand Cons: No analytics, no auto-calculation, hard to review monthly

Method 2: Excel/Google Sheets (Recommended)

Spreadsheet banato. Columns:

Keep these points in mind:
• Date — Description: Trade date, Example: 17-Aug-2026
• Stock — Description: Ticker, Example: RELIANCE
• Direction — Description: Buy/Sell, Example: Buy
• Setup — Description: What pattern/setup, Example: Breakout
• Entry — Description: Entry price, Example: 2850
• Stop-loss — Description: SL price, Example: 2810
• Target — Description: Target price, Example: 2930
• Exit — Description: Actual exit price, Example: 2890
• Quantity — Description: Shares traded, Example: 50
• P&L — Description: Profit/Loss amount, Example: +2000
• R:R — Description: Risk:Reward achieved, Example: 1:2
• Entry emotion — Description: How you felt, Example: Calm
• Exit emotion — Description: How you felt, Example: Satisfied
• Rule followed? — Description: Y/N, Example: Y
• Mistake — Description: What went wrong, Example: None
• Lesson — Description: What you learned, Example: Patience pays

Pros: Free, customizable, auto-calculation possible, easy to review Cons: Manual entry, discipline needed

Method 3: Trading Journal App (Advanced):
• TradeBull: Indian app, free + paid
• Edelweiss: Built into broker
• Stocklytics: Free
• Notion: Custom template (flexible)

Pros: Auto-sync with broker, charts attached, analytics built-in Cons: Cost (some paid), learning curve

How to improve from Journal

Step 1: Collect Data (1 Month):
• Write in every trade journal — NO exceptions
• "Small trade, skip it hoon" — NO. Every trade.
• Write emotions honestly - no shame in writing "Entry taken on FOMO"

Step 2: Pattern Dhoondho (End of Month):
• Which mistake is being repeated the most?
• Which setup is most profitable?
• Which day has the worst performance? (Maybe Monday mornings are weak?)
• Kaunsi time of day best? (Maybe 10-11 AM trades profitable, 2-3 PM losing?)

Step 3: Update Rule:
• Mistake identify → make rule → follow next month
• Example: "Averaging down 5 times this month" → Rule: "Never add to losing position"
• Example: "FOMO entries 3 times" → Rule: "No chase if stock goes up 3%"

Step 4: Track Improvement:
• Month 1: Win rate 35%, 8 mistakes/month
• Month 2: Win rate 42%, 5 mistakes/month
• Month 3: Win rate 48%, 3 mistakes/month
• Improvement = fewer mistakes, not more indicators

Key Metrics To Track

Keep these eight points in mind:
• Win rate — Formula: Winners / Total trades, Good: >45%, Bad: <30%
• Profit factor — Formula: Gross profit / Gross loss, Good: >1.5, Bad: <1.0
• Average R:R — Formula: Avg win / Avg loss, Good: >1.5, Bad: <1.0
• Max drawdown — Formula: Largest peak-to-trough decline, Good: <10%, Bad: >20%
• Average win — Formula: Total profit / Winners, Good: —, Bad: —
• Average loss — Formula: Total loss / Losers, Good: —, Bad: Should be < average win
• Trades per day — Formula: Total / Trading days, Good: 2-4, Bad: >8 (overtrading)
• Discipline score — Formula: Rules followed / Total trades, Good: >80%, Bad: <50%

Common Journaling Mistakes

Keep these six points in mind:
• Write only winning trades — write every trade — be more careful than the losers
• Skipping Emotions – Emotions are the most important field
• "I'll write later" — Immediately after exit likho — memory fades
• No review — Journal without review = diary. Review monthly minimum
• Trying to be perfect — Honest journal > pretty journal. Write mistakes.
• Skipping Setup name — Setup tracking shows how it works

FAQ

Q: Is the journal only for day traders? A: No. Useful for swing traders, position traders, even investors. Investor can write the reason for his buy/sell decisions — "Why did you buy, what was the thesis, is the thesis valid or not."

Q: After how many days should the review be done? A: Weekly minimum. Monthly deep review. Yearly strategy review. Daily small check — "What trade did you trade today, why, what happened."

Q: Is journal or notebook better than app? A: Notebook is the simplest for beginners. When there are 20+ trades/day to spreadsheet better. App is the most advanced but cost + learning curve. Start simple, upgrade later.

Q: Does journaling actually improve? A: Yes, 100%. But not just by writing – by review + rule update + rule follow. Journal without action = waste of time.

Q: Should losing trades also be written? A: Absolutely. You learn more from LOSERS. What to learn in winning trade? "Setup work done." In losing trades you learn - "What went wrong, what should be avoided."
