Understand Bollinger Bands — squeeze, breakout, mean reversion strategy. A complete guide with real examples on Indian stocks.

What Are Bollinger Bands?

Bollinger Bands are a volatility indicator created by John Bollinger in the 1980s. They are made up of 3 lines:

Keep these three points in mind:
• Middle Band = 20-period SMA (Simple Moving Average)
• Upper Band = Middle Band + (2 × Standard Deviation)
• Lower Band = Middle Band – (2 × Standard Deviation)

In simple words: Bollinger Bands form a "channel" around price. When volatility rises → the bands expand. When volatility falls → the bands squeeze.

Key insight: Price stays around the middle band (20 SMA) most of the time. When price reaches the upper or lower band, the probability of a reversal increases.

How to Read Bollinger Bands

Band Expansion (Volatility Is Rising):
• The upper and lower bands are moving apart
• It means the market is getting volatile
• A strong trend is under way
• Trend continuation likely

Band Squeeze (Volatility Is Falling):
• The upper and lower bands are moving closer
• It means the market is calm and consolidating
• A BREAKOUT IS COMING — expansion follows a squeeze
• This is the most important signal!

Band Contraction vs Expansion Cycle:
• Squeeze → Expansion → Contraction → Squeeze → Expansion...
• (calm) (volatile) (calming) (calm) (volatile)

The market is always in this cycle. Squeeze = the calm before the storm.

Bollinger Bands Strategies

Strategy 1: Squeeze Breakout (Most Popular)

Setup:
• Bollinger Bands are squeezing (very close together)
• Price consolidating around the middle band
• Suddenly price breaks above the upper band + volume spike
• Buy entry: After the breakout candle closes
• Stop loss: Slightly below the middle band (20 SMA)
• Target: Equal to the band width (measured move)

Sell setup: Reverse — price breaks the lower band + volume.

Strategy 2: Mean Reversion (Band Bounce)

Logic: Price always comes back toward the middle band (mean reversion).

Buy setup:
• Price touches the lower band
• RSI is oversold (< 30)
• A bullish reversal candle (hammer, bullish engulfing) forms at the lower band
• Entry: After the reversal candle closes
• Target: Middle band (20 SMA)
• Stop loss: Slightly below the lower band

Sell setup: Reverse — price touches the upper band + RSI overbought + bearish candle.

Strategy 3: Trend Riding (Walking the Bands)

Logic: In a strong trend, price can stay outside the band — "walking the band".

Buy setup:
• Price is above the upper band (strong uptrend)
• Price touches the upper band but closes above the upper band
• Bands expanding
• Entry: Pullback to middle band → bounce
• Stop loss: Middle band break
• Target: Next upper band level

Important: In trend riding, touching the band is not a reversal — it is trend continuation. Don't short just because price touched the upper band in an uptrend!

Bollinger Bands + RSI Combo (Powerful)

Bollinger Bands + RSI = best combo for mean reversion trades.

Perfect Buy Setup:
• Price touches the Bollinger Lower Band
• RSI < 30 (oversold)
• Bullish candle pattern (hammer, morning star)
• Volume spike on reversal candle
• Entry: After the candle closes
• Target: Middle band
• Stop loss: Lower band – 1 ATR

Perfect Sell Setup:
• Price touches the Bollinger Upper Band
• RSI > 70 (overbought)
• Bearish candle pattern (shooting star, evening star)
• Volume spike on reversal candle
• Entry: After the candle closes
• Target: Middle band
• Stop loss: Upper band + 1 ATR

Example: Bollinger + RSI on RELIANCE

Apply Bollinger Bands + RSI on the RELIANCE daily chart. Observe:
• Sometimes price at the lower band + RSI < 30 = bounce back to the middle band
• Sometimes price at the upper band + RSI > 70 = pullback to the middle band
• Breakout with volume after a squeeze = strong move

Bollinger Band Settings

Default: 20, 2:
• Period (20): SMA of 20 candles
• Std Dev (2): 2 standard deviations
• Best for: Daily charts, swing trading

Custom Settings:
• 20, 2 (default) — Best For: Swing trading, Notes: Standard, reliable
• 20, 1.5 — Best For: Intraday, Notes: Tighter bands, more touches
• 20, 2.5 — Best For: Long-term, Notes: Wider bands, fewer signals
• 50, 2 — Best For: Positional, Notes: Slower, bigger picture
• 10, 2 — Best For: Intraday (fast), Notes: Quick squeeze detection

TRT Pro Tip:

You can customize the Bollinger Bands settings on the TRT charting terminal. On the Pro plan (₹2,499/mo) the parameters of every indicator can be changed.

Bollinger Band Squeeze Scanner

How to Find a Squeeze?

Squeeze = the most profitable setup. But manually scanning 1,600+ stocks is impossible.

Options:
• TRT Screener — theretailtrader.org/stock-analysis-landing → Screener
• Filter: Bollinger Band Width < [threshold]
• Sort by: Tightest squeeze
• Pro feature: Screener data export (CSV)

Keep these three points in mind:
• Manual scan: Look at the daily chart of the top 50 stocks
• 5 min per stock × 50 = 2.5 hours daily
• Pro saves time with screener

Common Mistakes

Keep these points in mind:
• Taking a trade on every band touch — Upper band touch = sell, lower band touch = buy. WRONG. In a trend, bands get walked. Look at the context.

Keep these points in mind:
• Trading inside a squeeze — During a squeeze, price moves sideways. Wait for the breakout, don't trade inside the squeeze.

Keep these points in mind:
• Taking a trade without setting a target — Bollinger Bands give a target (middle band for mean reversion, band width for breakout). Use it.

Keep these points in mind:
• Using only Bollinger — Without RSI or volume, Bollinger signals are 50% accurate. RSI + volume = 70%+.

Keep these points in mind:
• Changing settings without understanding standard deviation — The default 2 std dev carries statistical significance. Changing it to 1.5 or 2.5 changes the meaning.

FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between Bollinger Bands and Keltner Channels?

Bollinger Bands use Standard Deviation (volatility based). Keltner Channels use ATR. Bollinger is more responsive, Keltner is smoother.

Q2: How long can a squeeze last?

Sometimes 2-3 days, sometimes 2-3 weeks. The longer the squeeze, the bigger the breakout. But you can't predict the exact time.

Q3: Do Bollinger Bands work intraday?

Yes, but use them on the 5 min or 15 min chart. The 1 min has too much noise. For intraday, try the 20, 1.5 settings.

Q4: Are Bollinger Bands free on TRT?

Yes! The free plan gives you 3 indicators — Bollinger Bands, RSI, and MACD. Try it at theretailtrader.org/charting.

Q5: Are Bollinger Bands signals 100% accurate?

No. ~65-70% accuracy with RSI + volume confirmation. Risk management is always necessary.
