What compounding is, the magic of compound interest, and the benefit of investing early — a complete guide.

What Is Compounding?

Compounding = Returns on returns. When your profit is reinvested and, the next year, you earn profit on top of the profit as well.

Einstein reportedly said: "Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world."

Compounding Example

Keep these nine points in mind:
• ₹1,00,000 invested @ 12% for:
• • 5 years: ₹1,76,000
• • 10 years: ₹3,10,000
• • 15 years: ₹5,47,000
• • 20 years: ₹9,65,000
• • 25 years: ₹17,00,000
• • 30 years: ₹29,96,000
• ₹1 lakh → ₹30 lakh in 30 years (without adding anything!)

Early vs Late Investing

Person A: Starts at 25:
• Age 25-35: ₹5,000/month SIP (10 years)
• Age 35-60: No more investment
• Total invested: ₹6,00,000
• At 60: ₹5.4 Crore

Person B: Starts at 35:
• Age 35-60: ₹5,000/month SIP (25 years)
• Total invested: ₹15,00,000
• At 60: ₹4.8 Crore

Person A invested ₹9 LAKH LESS but has ₹60 LAKH MORE!

That's the power of starting early.

SIP + Compounding

Keep these four points in mind:
• ₹5,000 — 10 Years: ₹11.6L, 20 Years: ₹49.9L, 30 Years: ₹1.76 Cr
• ₹10,000 — 10 Years: ₹23.2L, 20 Years: ₹99.8L, 30 Years: ₹3.52 Cr
• ₹25,000 — 10 Years: ₹58.0L, 20 Years: ₹2.50 Cr, 30 Years: ₹8.80 Cr
• ₹50,000 — 10 Years: ₹1.16 Cr, 20 Years: ₹5.00 Cr, 30 Years: ₹17.6 Cr

Assumption: 12% annual returns

Key Rules of Compounding

Rule of 72:
• Years to double = 72 / Return Rate
• 12% returns → 72/12 = 6 years to double
• 15% returns → 72/15 = 4.8 years to double
• 8% returns → 72/8 = 9 years to double

Rule of 114:
• Years to triple = 114 / Return Rate
• 12% returns → 114/12 = 9.5 years to triple

Compounding Enemies

Stopping SIP

Stopping your SIP = breaking compounding. Continue, even in bear markets.

Withdrawing Early

Withdrawal = removing the fuel of compounding.

Timing the Market

"I'll sell everything and buy lower" — Most people time it wrong. Stay invested.

High Expense Ratio

1% expense = ₹57 lakh less over 30 years. The expense ratio has a very big impact on compounding.
