The effect of making choices continuously, and how rules reduce it
Published by The Retail Trader · AUG 05, 2026 · Trading Psychology
There is a practical limit to how many decisions can be made in a day. Beyond that limit decisions become hasty and careless — and trading is all day a job of decisions.
Late in the day fewer questions are asked of setups, size is chosen more casually, and the stop loss calculation gets skipped.
This is why many traders' results are clearly different in the first and second half of the day.
Every rule removes a decision:
• A position size formula fixed in advance — no thinking on each trade.
• Build the watchlist at night, not during the day.
• A limit on max trades per day.
• After a fixed time, no new trades, only managing the existing ones.
Group your trades by time and look — which hours' trades made money and which lost it. For most people that one chart is among the most useful data of the whole year.
