COMPARISON: BREAKING YOUR PLAN BECAUSE OF OTHERS' RETURNS

Screenshot culture, survivorship, and sticking to your own benchmark

Published by The Retail Trader · AUG 09, 2026 · Trading Psychology

Your year was going fine. Then someone sent a screenshot — a big gain in a single trade. From the next day, your plan starts to look different. This comparison is the thing that breaks good systems the most.

WHAT YOU ARE SEEING IS NOT THE WHOLE PICTURE

People send screenshots of wins, not of losses. A screenshot of one trade does not tell you how many losses are behind it, how much capital was deployed, and how much risk was taken.

And a lot of screenshots are not even real. A demo account, an edited image, or a cherry-picked day — all three are common. What cannot be verified is not data.

SURVIVORSHIP — THOSE YOU SEE ARE THE ONES WHO SURVIVED

You only see those who are still in the game and speaking. The people who adopted the same method and dropped out do not post anything.

So judging the success of a method by its famous people is backwards. That sample has already been filtered.

WHAT YOUR BENCHMARK SHOULD BE

Instead of other people's returns, measure these three things:
• Did I follow my rules — as a percentage.
• Did my drawdown stay within my set limit or not.
• What is my expectancy over the last 50 trades.
• And one external benchmark — the index. If your long-term result is below the index, that is a real question. Not a stranger's screenshot.

RETURN WITHOUT RISK MEANS NOTHING

'I made 40% this month' is not information in itself. Without how much capital, how much risk taken, and how many times it happened, that number is useless.

A person who puts their entire capital into one trade every month will make 40% at some point. That also has another outcome, and it does not become a screenshot.

ONE SMALL PRACTICAL POINT

Staying away from the groups and feeds that keep making you feel 'I have fallen behind' is itself a risk management step. It is not weakness — it is removing the noise that was altering your decisions.
