What is the difference between swing trading and intraday trading, and which is better — a complete guide for Indian traders.
In swing trading you hold a trade for 2-10 days. You analyze the daily chart, place the order, and check back after a couple of days.
Core concept: > Swing trading = Capturing the profit of a short-term trend. A 2-10 day game.
In intraday trading you buy and sell on the same day. The position is not carried overnight.
Core concept: > Intraday = Buy in the morning, sell by evening. Same day, same trade.
Keep these points in mind:
• Duration — Swing Trading: 2-10 days, Intraday Trading: Same day
• Chart — Swing Trading: Daily, Intraday Trading: 1-15 min
• Time required — Swing Trading: 30 min/day, Intraday Trading: Full-time screen
• Leverage — Swing Trading: 1x (full capital), Intraday Trading: 5-20x
• Risk — Swing Trading: High, Intraday Trading: Very High
• Stress — Swing Trading: Moderate, Intraday Trading: Very High
• Win rate — Swing Trading: 45-55%, Intraday Trading: 35-45%
• Capital needed — Swing Trading: ₹50,000+, Intraday Trading: ₹1,00,000+
• Best for — Swing Trading: Working professionals, Intraday Trading: Full-time traders
• Brokerage — Swing Trading: Lower (fewer trades), Intraday Trading: Higher (many trades)
• Overnight risk — Swing Trading: Yes (gap up/down), Intraday Trading: No
• Analysis — Swing Trading: Technical + Fundamental, Intraday Trading: Purely technical
• Indicators — Swing Trading: RSI, MA, MACD (daily), Intraday Trading: VWAP, EMA (intraday)
Swing Trading Risks:
• Gap risk: Overnight gap up/down
• Weekend risk: Global events during the weekend
• Earnings risk: Results announcement during the hold
• Trend reversal: Trend change during the hold
Intraday Trading Risks:
• Leverage risk: 5-20x leverage = amplified losses
• Whipsaw risk: False breakouts intraday
• Slippage: In a fast market the order fill price differs
• Emotional risk: Full-time screen = emotional decisions
• Overtrading: Multiple trades = multiple losses
Swing Trading:
• Average return: 2-5% per trade
• Trades per month: 8-15
• Monthly target: 10-20%
• Win rate needed: 45%+ (with 1:2 R:R)
• Time to profitability: 6-12 months learning
Intraday Trading:
• Average return: 0.5-2% per trade
• Trades per day: 3-5
• Monthly target: 5-15%
• Win rate needed: 50%+ (with 1:1.5 R:R)
• Time to profitability: 12-24 months learning
Swing trading is more profitable for most traders — less stress, less time, better risk-adjusted returns.
Choose Swing Trading When:
• ✅ You are a working professional (you have a full-time job)
• ✅ You can't spend much time on the screen
• ✅ You want less stress
• ✅ You can handle overnight risk
• ✅ You prefer analysis on the daily chart
• ✅ You have patience (you can wait 2-10 days)
Choose Intraday When:
• ✅ You are a full-time trader
• ✅ You can give 6+ hours to the screen
• ✅ You can make fast decisions
• ✅ Your emotional control is strong
• ✅ You understand leverage risk
• ✅ You want quick results
Don't Do Either When:
• ❌ You have only part-time screen time
• ❌ Your emotional control is weak
• ❌ Capital is < ₹50,000
• ❌ Experience is < 6 months
• ❌ You haven't learned risk management
Many traders start with intraday (wrong) and then shift to swing (right). A better approach:
Keep these points in mind:
• PHASE 1: LEARNING (Month 1-3)
• • Learn swing trading (daily chart)
• • Do paper trading
• • Read TRT articles
• • Practice on a demo account
• PHASE 2: SMALL SWING TRADES (Month 4-6)
• • ₹25,000-50,000 capital
• • 2-3 swing trades per week
• • Daily chart + RSI + MA
• • 2% risk per trade
• PHASE 3: SCALE UP (Month 7-12)
• • ₹1,00,000+ capital
• • 5-8 swing trades per month
• • Multiple strategies
• • Consistent profitability
• PHASE 4: OPTIONAL INTRADAY (Month 12+)
• • Only once swing trading is profitable
• • Add intraday (small capital)
• • You can run both in parallel
• • Separate intraday capital
Advanced traders do both:
Keep these two points in mind:
• 70% — Style: Swing trading, Capital: ₹3,50,000, Time: 30 min/day
• 30% — Style: Intraday trading, Capital: ₹1,50,000, Time: 6 hours/day
Benefit: Consistent income from swing, extra alpha from intraday. The risk of each is different — diversification.
