What IPO GMP is, how to check the grey market premium, and predicting listing price from GMP — a guide.

What Is GMP?

GMP = Grey Market Premium. It is the premium at which IPO shares trade in the unofficial market — before listing.

Simple definition: > GMP = how much premium/discount an IPO has before listing. If GMP is ₹100, the listing price is expected to be ₹100 higher.

How GMP Works

Keep these six points in mind:
• IPO Price: ₹500
• GMP: ₹150
• Expected Listing Price: ₹500 + ₹150 = ₹650
• If GMP is negative (-₹50):
• Expected Listing: ₹500 - ₹50 = ₹450 (listing below IPO price)

GMP Factors

Keep these five points in mind:
• Company quality — Strong company → High GMP
• Subscription — Oversubscription → High GMP
• Market sentiment — Bull market → High GMP
• Grey market demand — High demand → High GMP
• Sector — Hot sector (IT, EV) → High GMP

GMP Interpretation

Keep these four points in mind:
• GMP > 50% — Listing Expectation: Strong listing, Apply?: ✅ Apply
• GMP 20-50% — Listing Expectation: Decent listing, Apply?: ✅ Apply
• GMP 0-20% — Listing Expectation: Flat listing, Apply?: ⚠️ Think
• GMP negative — Listing Expectation: Below IPO price, Apply?: ❌ Avoid
