What is the best time to invest in the stock market, market timing vs time in the market — a guide.
Short answer: Now. Right now.
Long answer: "Time in the market" beats "timing the market" — always.
Keep these five points in mind:
• Perfect timing (best day every year) — 14.2% CAGR
• Always invested (from day 1) — 12.5% CAGR
• Worst timing (worst day every year) — 8.6% CAGR
• Missed 10 best days — 7.8% CAGR
• Missed 20 best days — 5.2% CAGR
Key insight: Missing just the 10 best days in 20 years = Returns get cut in HALF!
With a SIP you don't need timing:
• When the market is high: You get fewer units
• When the market is low: You get more units
• It averages out
• Rupee cost averaging works
Don't put all your money in at once. Use a SIP or STP.
Taking a loan to invest = Suicide. If the market falls, you have the loan + the loss both.
Don't invest your emergency fund. Keep it in a liquid fund.
"The market is very high, everyone is making money!" — FOMO leads to losses.
"The market is falling, sell everything!" — Panic selling leads to losses.
Keep these five points in mind:
• Market at all-time high — SIP (6-12 months)
• Market crashed 20%+ — Lump sum (50%) + SIP (50%)
• Regular salary — Monthly SIP
• Bonus/windfall — STP (3-6 months)
• Uncertain market — SIP
Keep these points in mind:
