Profit money and your own money — the mind keeps them apart
Published by The Retail Trader · JUL 31, 2026 · Trading Psychology
Money won from the market feels different. People take more risk with it, because it feels like "house money". That money is exactly like all the rest of the money.
The mind puts money into separate accounts according to its source — salary, bonus, profit, gift. Financially, all of it is the same thing.
In trading this shows up as discipline loosening on profit money, and that same money is the first to go back.
This bias shows up in other places too:
• One position has a loss and another has a profit — thinking about them separately instead of looking at the net of both.
• Creating a "long term" bucket into which every trapped trade gets dumped.
• Investing while a loan is running, keeping the two in separate accounts.
• Treating a tax refund or bonus as "extra" and spending it under different rules.
Looking at a single net worth number is the simplest cure for this bias. When everything is visible in one place, the question of whether this risk is right for the whole portfolio answers itself.
