The time when the most trades happen with the least thought
Published by The Retail Trader · JUL 28, 2026 · Trading Psychology
Right after big news, the market has the most activity and the least clarity. Decisions made in that first hour are often the most expensive decisions of the day.
Volatility rises, spreads widen, and the price moves sharply in both directions. Along with it comes a sense of urgency that you have to do something right now.
But at that moment you do not know more than anyone else. Everyone has the same headline. The only difference is reaction speed, and in that race retail traders are last.
For a big event, these rules can be written down in advance:
• Reduce position size before the event, or do not hold a position at all.
• Do not place market orders at all in the first few minutes.
• Take a new trade only if it matches a setup you wrote down beforehand.
• If you already hold a position, the plan should exist beforehand and not be made on the spot.
Missing a big move is not a loss. The market opens every day, and the spread in the first hour itself tells you there is no confidence in the price yet. Waiting for that confidence is often the cheaper choice.
