SIP: THE FULL MATHS OF A FIXED AMOUNT EVERY MONTH

The real meaning of rupee cost averaging, and the claims wrongly made in the name of SIP

Published by The Retail Trader · AUG 09, 2026 · Features

SIP is the most-sold financial concept in India, and some claims have stuck to it that it never makes itself. It is important to understand its real benefit — because that real benefit is quite large, it is just not the one that gets advertised.

THE MECHANISM

Each month a set amount goes into the same place. When the price is high you get fewer units, when it is low you get more. This is called rupee cost averaging.

The result is that your average cost does not run away too much, however much the market goes up and down.

WHAT THE REAL BENEFIT IS

The biggest benefit of a SIP is not maths, it is behaviour. It removes the need to make a decision — and most retail losses come from decisions taken at the wrong time, not from the wrong product.

The second benefit is that it makes you buy even during a fall. The period when investing manually feels hardest is exactly the period when a SIP gives the most units.

CLAIMS THAT ARE WRONG

These things are said in the name of SIP and are not correct:
• 'A SIP cannot lose' — it can. If the market stays down for a long time, the SIP will also be in loss.
• 'A SIP is always better than a lump sum' — no. In a steadily rising market the lump sum comes out ahead. A SIP's benefit lies in uncertainty, not in every situation.
• 'A SIP means a guaranteed return' — nothing market-linked gives a guarantee, whatever the method.
• 'If the SIP keeps running, timing is not needed' — the need for timing reduces at entry, not at exit. Near the goal you need a separate exit plan.

A SIP WORKS ONLY IF IT KEEPS RUNNING

The most common mistake is that people stop the SIP during a fall. That is exactly the time when it is working the hardest.

So keep the SIP amount at what you can pay without interruption even in a bad period. A small SIP that runs for ten years is better than a big SIP that stops in eight months.

ONE MORE PRACTICAL POINT

A SIP is a method, not a product. The choice of what it goes into is just as important. A SIP does not fix a bad choice — it only smooths your entry into it.
