What are spread strategies and how to use them in options trading — bull spread, bear spread, calendar spread all in simple Hindi.
In spread strategy you buy one option and sell another – same underlying, different strike or expiry. This limits risk and also limits profit potential.
Simple definition: > Spread = Buy one option + Sell another option = Limited risk, limited reward
Why Spreads?:
• Unlimited risk (selling) — Limited risk
• High premium (buying) — Reduced cost
• Directional bet — Direction + range play
• Simple — Slightly complex
Setup:
• ATM Call buy (long leg)
• OTM Call sell (short leg)
Example:
• Nifty at 20,000
• Buy 20,000 CE @ ₹100
• Sell 20,200 CE @ ₹50
• Net cost: ₹50 (₹100 - ₹50)
Max Profit: ₹200 (width) - ₹50 (cost) = ₹150 Max Loss: ₹50 (premium paid) Breakeven: 20,050
When to use: Moderately bullish
Setup:
• ATM Put buy (long leg)
• OTM Put sell (short leg)
Example:
• Nifty at 20,000
• Buy 20,000 PE @ ₹100
• Sell 19,800 PE @ ₹50
• Net cost: ₹50
Max Profit: ₹150 Max Loss: ₹50 Breakeven: 19,950
When to use: Moderately bearish
Setup:
• OTM Put sell (collect premium)
• Further OTM Put buy (protection)
Example:
• Nifty at 20,000
• Sell 19,800 PE @ ₹70
• Buy 19,600 PE @ ₹30
• Net credit: ₹40
Max Profit: ₹40 (credit received) Max Loss: ₹160 (width) - ₹40 = ₹120 Breakeven: 19,760
When to use: Bullish, want income
Setup:
• Near-month option sell (fast theta decay)
• Far-month option buy (slow theta decay)
Example:
• Nifty at 20,000
• Sell August 20,000 CE @ ₹80
• Buy September 20,000 CE @ ₹150
• Net cost: ₹70
Max Profit: If Nifty stays near 20,000 at August expiry Max Loss: ₹70 (net premium)
When to use: Neutral, expect low volatility near-term

• Moderately bullish — Strategy: Bull Call Spread, Risk: Limited, Reward: Limited
