Percentage stop, structure stop, volatility stop — and why removing a stop is the most expensive habit

Two wrong ideas about stop losses are the most common: one, that placing a stop is what gets it hit; two, that keeping a stop 'mentally' is enough. Both are the claims of people whose stops never actually trigger because they don't really believe in them.
A stop's job is not to save you from loss. Its job is to decide how big the loss will be. This small difference changes the whole way of thinking.
A stop also says where your analysis is proven wrong. If you cannot name that level, the thesis of the trade itself is not clear.
Each has its own job:
• Percentage stop — a fixed % below entry. It is simple, but it does not listen to the chart at all. It often lands exactly where the normal noise is.
• Structure stop — beyond a swing low, a support zone or a pattern. This is better because it means: if it breaks here, my setup is over.
• Volatility stop — based on the stock's own average range. Tight for a calm stock, wide for a volatile one. A yardstick like ATR serves this purpose.
A good habit: first set the stop level from structure, then work out the position size from it. If you do it the other way round, people stretch the stop to fit the size — and that is the most common mistake.
The position goes against you, the stop is getting close, and the trader nudges it back a little. Once. Then again. Each time they tell themselves they are giving it 'more room'.
This is the one habit that turns a small loss into an account-ending loss. A stop that can be removed is not a stop — it is a suggestion.
A good system hits its stop 40-50% of the time. This is not a flaw of the system, it is its cost.
The real failure is this: the stop got hit and you have no idea why. After every stop-out write one line — the setup was wrong, the timing was wrong, or the stop level was wrong. The remedy for each of the three is different.
Put the order into the system, not just in your head. A mental stop works when you are calm — and on the day you need it, you are not calm.
