Imagine you throw a ball up—how many times does it return to the same height? Because gravity pulls below it. This exact phenomenon happens in the stock market too — support and resistance levels act like "gravity"! 🏀
Support is that price level where buying becomes so strong that the price stops falling. Resistance is the level where the selling pressure is so much that the price stops going up.
Why make these levels? Because these are psychological zones:
• Traders remember — “first rose from the sky” or “first fell from the sky”
• Institutional orders are placed there
• Clusters of stop losses are also made at these levels.
In this article you will learn:
• How support and resistance are defined (basics)
• 5 proven methods to identify levels on charts
• How does Breakout and Bounce strategy work?
• Real examples of Indian stock market
• Common mistakes that every beginner makes
Let's get started! 🇮🇳
Support Level (Sahara): Imagine your car is coming down a hill, but you have bumpers installed on the road some distance down. The car stops suddenly till a bumper. The same thing happens in the market — the price comes down, buyers buy the vehicle saying "it's cheaper", and the price bounces and goes up.
Resistance Level: Now imagine that the car is going up a hill, but at some height there is a glass ceiling which is invisible but when you touch it, the car stops. In the market, sellers start selling at our level by saying “it has become expensive”.
Key Points:
• Support and resistance are lines, not exact numbers — there is a zone (±1-2%)
• A level is sometimes support and sometimes resistance — roles can be reversed!
• The number of times the price has touched a level and been rejected, the stronger that level is.
• Time more → Level stronger
Real Example: Look at the chart of HDFC Bank – sometimes support was found at ₹ 1,500 (buyers came), but when it was broken, resistance stopped (sellers came). Every trader should understand this role reversal concept.
This is the most simple and effective method:
• Swing Low: Price which went back above the point → Support may be banned
• Swing High: Price that falls below the point → Resistance can ban
How to identify: What do you do on the chart — how many times did the price bounce from a hi level? The level which has been tested 2+ times, draw the successful line. This is your support/resistance level!
Tip: The more touches there are, the stronger the level — but remember, one day it will break! Wait for the breakout until the direction is confirmed.
Experienced traders do not draw exact lines – zones are formed. Because the price in the market never turns to the exact number.
Example: If the stock has taken support 3 times between ₹1,050 to ₹1,070, then your support zone will be ₹1,040-₹1,080. Entry lo is at the upper end of the zone, stop loss is below the lower end.
Advantage of Zones: Avoids false breakouts because you are not expecting an exact number — you are expecting a range.
Volume shows at which price level the most trading has taken place. At levels at which volume spikes, there is strong support/resistance.
High Volume Node (HVN): Where there is high volume – this is where the price takes time to break, because many traders have positions here. Support/resistance is strong.
Low Volume Node (LVN): Where low volume occurs — price moves quickly through this zone. Breakout is fast but fake breakout risk is also high.
Moving averages automatically act as support/resistance!
Keep these two points in mind:
• In Uptrend: Hi bounces from MA as price approaches → MA support goes away
• In Downtrend: Price suddenly rejects till MA → MA resistance gets banned
Pro Strategy: 50-day SMA and 200-day SMA are automatic institutional support/resistance levels in Indian markets. Nifty watches both MAs every day. Our Pro plan on theretailtrader.org automatically sends alerts on MA levels! 📊
Indian traders follow round numbers — these are psychological support/resistance:
• ₹100, ₹200, ₹500, ₹1000 — buying/selling is more at these levels.
• Nifty's 200-point levels (21,600, 21,800, 22,000)
Example: BSE Sensex always reacts in round numbers (500 point intervals). This pattern is so consistent that even institutional traders place orders at these levels.
How it works: When the price crosses the resistance level and goes up, it means buyers have defeated the sellers. Now this resistance becomes a new support.
Breakout Confirmation Rules:
• Look for the volume spike — on the day of the breakout the volume should be 2x higher than average.
• Close above level — make intraday high, confirm actual close on next candle
• Retesting happening? — After the breakout, the price comes back to the level (retest) and bounces → This is the strongest confirmation!
Real Example: Tata Steel broke ₹180 resistance and went to ₹195. On the day of breakout the volume was 3x normal. In the next 2 weeks it broke ₹180 ab support and the price went up to ₹210 — 16% return! 📈
How it works: Support break means sellers are dominant. Price may go down rapidly.
Breakdown Confirmation:
• Close should be below support (not just intraday dip)
• Volume should increase on breakdown days
• Sell if retracement is above – this is the strongest entry point!
False breakout is when the price breaks the level but keeps falling back in — trap! To avoid this:
• Watch candle close (not wick, body) ✅
• Confirm next candle direction ✅
• Check Volume ✅
• Align multiple timeframes ✅
Setup: When the market is sideways and clear support/resistance levels are banned.
Keep these three points in mind:
• Buy: Near Support, at green candle confirmation
• Sell: Near resistance, at red candle rejection signal
• Stop loss: 1-2% outside the Support/Resistance zone
Example: A stock is in the range between ₹400 to ₹500. Every time he is taking support at ₹400 and getting rejected at ₹500. Buy at ₹405 (at support), sell at ₹495 (before resistance). Simple!
Setup: When the price consolidates near a level for a long time and then breaks out.
Keep these two points in mind:
• Entry: Retest par entry after level break
• Target: Move as much as the width of the previous range → If there was a range of ₹400 to ₹500 (₹100), target ₹600 on breakout.
Indian Market Example: Nifty consolidated between 20,500-21,000 for 3 months. Breakout was 21,000+ and the market completed the target reaching 22,000!
This strategy works after a breakout — trade low when the role of the level reverses:
• Resistance is broken → Ab support is banned → BUY on retest
• Support is broken → Ab resistance is banned → SELL on retest
Example: There was resistance at ₹750 which was broken. Ab price came back to ₹750 and bounced higher from here — flip trade successful! 🎯
Fibonacci levels automatically calculate support/resistance:
• 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8% — these levels par price bounces often
• Indian traders especially consider the 61.8% level as the "golden ratio" and give it a lot of respect.
How to use: Draw Fibonacci from low to high of the trend. If the trend is strong, expect a bounce at 38.2-50% retracement — this is the best entry point!
Pivot points are calculated on the basis of period's close, high, low and give support/resistance levels for the next day:
• R1, R2, R3 — Resistance levels above
• S1, S2, S3 — Support levels below
Intraday traders especially use pivot points a lot in BankNifty options. Auto-calculated pivot points are available in the Pro plan of theretailtrader.org! 📐
A slightly advanced concept from support/resistance:
• Demand Zone: Where the price went up sharply (buyers dominant) — buy back at the next level
• Supply Zone: Where the price dropped sharply (sellers dominant the) — sell back to the low.
These zones are rectangles on the chart, not exact lines. Institutional orders occur in these zones — that is why these levels are very strong.
❌ Mistake 1: Making the line pixel-perfect — Support/resistance is a zone, not an exact number. Instead of ₹500.00, look at ₹495-₹505. Entry-exit on exact number = slippage and missed trades!
❌ Mistake 2: Entering hi with breakout (no confirmation) — Price touched level and returned to aa or closed below — breakout may fail. Watch the candle body close, wait for retest before entering.
❌ Mistake 3: Ignoring the trend – resistance break in downtrend = strong sell signal. Support break in uptrend = small correction. Context matters — not just level!
❌ Mistake 4: Keeping inside the stop loss zone – If you are identifying support at ₹500 and set the stop loss at ₹498, then normal wick will hit your position. Keep out of stop loss zone — at least ₹2-3% below/above.
❌ Mistake 5: Looking at only one timeframe – Support looks strong on the daily chart but has already been broken on the hourly chart! Do multi-timeframe analysis — higher timeframe trend, lower timeframe entry.
A1: Combination of both is best. Learn to draw manually (trendlines, swing highs/lows), and then use the automatic levels in theretailtrader.org's Pro plan for confirmation. Manual + automated combo is the most reliable!
A2: Yes of course! The levels keep updating as new swing highs/lows are formed. After the old level is broken, a new level has to be created. Rule of thumb: The level that has been tested in the last 3-6 months is considered current.
A3: This is very important for options traders! The support/resistance near the strike prices changes the behavior of the vehicle option premium. Support par put premium cheap, call expensive. Opposite on resistance.
A4: For intraday use the previous day's high-low, opening range (first 15 min), and pivot points. Identify recent swing highs/lows on live chart. These levels on 5-minute and 15-minute charts are perfect for intraday trading.
A5: In TradingView free version you can manually draw lines. Our ₹2,499/mo Pro plan at theretailtrader.org automatically calculates levels and sends alerts — this saves time and improves accuracy!
