The January 2012 audit — what every major index and every sector did across the month's 20 sessions, all measured from the 2011-12-30 close to the 2012-01-31 close.
An account of 20 sessions, best to worst:
• Bank Nifty — +24.48%, close 9919.45
• Midcap 100 — +16.18%, close 7100.55
• Nifty 500 — +13.48%, close 4082.85
• Nifty 50 — +12.43%, close 5199.25
• Sensex — +11.25%, close 17193.55
Of the Nifty's 20 sessions, 14 were up and 6 down. The best day was 2012-01-03 (+3.05%), the worst 2012-01-30 (-2.26%). There were 3.7 points between the Midcap 100 and the Nifty — the broad market was ahead of large caps.
All eight of the eight sectors closed positive — a broad-based month:
• PSU Bank — +25.84%
• Realty — +25.65%
• Metal — +24.72%
• Bank — +24.48%
• Media — +9.84%
• Pharma — +6.86%
• FMCG — +1.08%
• IT — +0.89%
That spread is worth attention: the index recorded +12.43%, but PSU Bank was at +25.84% and IT at +0.89%. Within one and the same month, this was an entirely different month for two portfolios.
India VIX ranged between 21.02 and 27.53 during the month and closed at 22.66. The deepest peak-to-trough fall in the Nifty inside the month was -2.3% — so despite the month's net number of +12.43%, a decline of that depth was seen along the way.
