2017-09-29 to 2017-10-31 — the return of every index and sector

INDEX LEVEL

An account of 20 sessions, best to worst:
• Midcap 100 — +8.12%, close 19578.40
• Nifty 500 — +6.44%, close 9153.60
• Sensex — +6.17%, close 33213.13
• Nifty 50 — +5.59%, close 10335.30
• Bank Nifty — +4.02%, close 25019.35

Of the Nifty's 20 sessions, 14 were up and 6 down. The best day was 2017-10-12 (+1.12%), the worst 2017-10-19 (-0.63%). There were 2.5 points between the Midcap 100 and the Nifty — the broad market was ahead of large caps.

SECTOR LEVEL

All eight of the eight sectors closed positive — a broad-based month:
• PSU Bank — +24.40%
• Realty — +11.33%
• Metal — +9.19%
• Pharma — +6.36%
• Media — +5.62%
• FMCG — +4.93%
• Bank — +4.02%
• IT — +3.46%

That spread is worth attention: the index recorded +5.59%, but PSU Bank was at +24.40% and IT at +3.46%. Within one and the same month, this was an entirely different month for two portfolios.

VOLATILITY AND DRAWDOWN

India VIX ranged between 11.04 and 12.46 during the month and closed at 12.44. The deepest peak-to-trough fall in the Nifty inside the month was -0.9% — so despite the month's net number of +5.59%, a decline of that depth was seen along the way.
