The April 2020 audit — what every major index and every sector did across the month's 18 sessions, all measured from the 2020-03-31 close to the 2020-04-30 close.
An account of 18 sessions, best to worst:
• Midcap 100 — +15.36%, close 13502.00
• Nifty 50 — +14.68%, close 9859.90
• Nifty 500 — +14.52%, close 8012.90
• Sensex — +14.42%, close 33717.62
• Bank Nifty — +12.49%, close 21534.50
Of the Nifty's 18 sessions, 10 were up and 8 down. The best day was 2020-04-07 (+8.76%), the worst 2020-04-01 (-4.00%).
All eight of the eight sectors closed positive — a broad-based month:
• Pharma — +29.97%
• Metal — +17.28%
• Bank — +12.49%
• Media — +11.52%
• IT — +10.54%
• Realty — +6.72%
• FMCG — +4.94%
• PSU Bank — +0.09%
That spread is worth attention: the index recorded +14.68%, but Pharma was at +29.97% and PSU Bank at +0.09%. Within one and the same month, this was an entirely different month for two portfolios.
India VIX ranged between 33.84 and 60.05 during the month and closed at 33.99. The deepest peak-to-trough fall in the Nifty inside the month was -3.1% — so despite the month's net number of +14.68%, a decline of that depth was seen along the way.
