The June 2020 audit — what every major index and every sector did across the month's 22 sessions, all measured from the 2020-05-29 close to the 2020-06-30 close.
An account of 22 sessions, best to worst:
• Midcap 100 — +10.78%, close 14704.00
• Bank Nifty — +10.74%, close 21370.15
• Nifty 500 — +8.34%, close 8474.80
• Sensex — +7.68%, close 34915.80
• Nifty 50 — +7.53%, close 10302.10
Of the Nifty's 22 sessions, 13 were up and 9 down. The best day was 2020-06-01 (+2.57%), the worst 2020-06-11 (-2.12%). There were 3.2 points between the Midcap 100 and the Nifty — the broad market was ahead of large caps.
All eight of the eight sectors closed positive — a broad-based month:
• PSU Bank — +26.38%
• Media — +14.05%
• Realty — +12.52%
• Bank — +10.74%
• Metal — +5.93%
• IT — +5.31%
• FMCG — +2.62%
• Pharma — +2.22%
That spread is worth attention: the index recorded +7.53%, but PSU Bank was at +26.38% and Pharma at +2.22%. Within one and the same month, this was an entirely different month for two portfolios.
India VIX ranged between 28.68 and 33.35 during the month and closed at 29.12. The deepest peak-to-trough fall in the Nifty inside the month was -3.5% — so despite the month's net number of +7.53%, a decline of that depth was seen along the way.
