Nifty +10.51%, Bank Nifty +17.15%, PSU Bank +30.5% — and IT, Realty, Media in the red
Published by The Retail Trader · DEC 31, 2025 · Performance Review
2025 was a good year — but not for everyone. Double-digit gains at the index level, and at the sector level five out of eight negative. This is the kind of year where 'the market gave 10%' and 'my portfolio is red' can both be true.
Full year:
• Bank Nifty — +17.15%
• Nifty 50 — +10.51%
• Sensex — +9.06%
• Nifty 500 — +6.69%
• Midcap 100 — +5.74%
Note that the ladder is upside down. The Nifty 50 left both the Nifty 500 and the Midcap 100 behind. In 19 years, largecaps have beaten midcaps only 7 times — 2025 is one of them.
Calendar year 2025:
• PSU Bank — +30.5%
• Metal — +29.1%
• Bank — +17.1%
• FMCG — -2.3%
• Pharma — -2.9%
• IT — -12.6%
• Realty — -16.6%
• Media — -20.5%
PSU Bank was the leader of 2025. Recall the pattern from our sector rotation study: since 2012, not even once has the previous year's leader been the leader the next year. In 2026, PSU Bank is at -2.2% year-to-date — the pattern repeated again.
In 2024 the Midcap 100 was at +23.86% and the Nifty at +8.80%. In 2025 that reversed: Midcap +5.74%, Nifty +10.51%. A 15-point swing in one year on the basis of size alone — with no sector call at all.
