Week Character: Consolidation week. Market range-bound with minor positive bias. No major breakout or breakdown. Low volatility period.
1. Monday (Aug 11) — Flat Start:
• Sensex -32 points, Nifty almost flat
• Mixed global cues (US markets edged down from all-time high)
• Asian markets mixed
• Crude oil surge weighed on sentiment
2. Mid-Week — Consolidation:
• Market moved in narrow range
• IT stocks under pressure (Wipro, Tech Mahindra leading losers)
• Banking stocks provided support (SBI, ICICI steady)
• Defense stocks in focus (BHEL, HAL, BEL gaining)
3. Friday (Aug 15) — Independence Day:
• Market closed for Independence Day
• Thursday was last trading day
• Weekly close slightly positive
Keep these seven points in mind:
• Banking — Performance: ✅ Slightly positive, Key Stocks: SBI, ICICI, HDFC stable
• IT — Performance: ❌ Under pressure, Key Stocks: Wipro, TechM, HCL Tech down
• Defense — Performance: ✅ Strong, Key Stocks: BHEL, HAL, BEL, Mazagon Dock up
• PSU — Performance: ✅ Positive, Key Stocks: Railway stocks, defense PSUs
• Auto — Performance: ⚠️ Mixed, Key Stocks: Tata Motors up, others flat
• Pharma — Performance: ⚠️ Neutral, Key Stocks: No major moves
• Metal — Performance: ⚠️ Sideways, Key Stocks: Coal India, Vedanta range-bound
Gainers:
• BHEL — Defense/PSU rally continued
• HAL — Defense sector momentum
• BEL — Electronics defense stock strong
• Mazagon Dock — Ship defense stock
• Cochin Shipyard — Defense shipbuilding
Losers:
• Wipro — IT sector weakness
• Tech Mahindra — IT underperformance
• HCL Tech — IT pressure
• LTIMindtree — IT mid-cap weak
• Persistent Systems — IT profit booking
High Volume:
• Vodafone Idea — Consistently highest volume
• Yes Bank — High volume, volatile
• PNB — Banking activity
Keep these five points in mind:
• US Markets: Edged down from all-time high. Crude oil surge impacted.
• Asian Markets: Mixed through the week
• Crude Oil: Surged higher (impacting IT and import-sensitive sectors)
• Dollar Index: Stable
• FIIs: Mixed activity — some selling in IT, buying in PSU/banking
IT sector under pressure while defence/PSU kept rallying. This is sector rotation — when one sector is weak, the other strong. It is important to keep a diversified portfolio.
Market remained sideways the whole week. Taking trades during consolidation = losing money in noise. Wait for breakout/breakdown with volume.
There is a strong uptrend in defense stocks (HAL, BEL, BHEL). Government spending + Make in India push. But don't chase — wait for the pullback.
